Friday’s meet schedule with highlights of every event. For field events, the start times are listed, with the finals often starting about 30 minutes after the preliminaries.

Boys Shot Put, 3:30 p.m. Why watch? North Bend’s Elliot Adams should have little competition in the event, but how often do you get to watch a 50-foot effort?

Girls High Jump, 3:30 p.m. Why watch? Marshfield’s Ali Worthen is going for her fourth county title in the event. She’s also a state champion and always entertaining.

Boys Triple Jump, 3:30 p.m. Why watch? Two of the elite jumpers in the state in all classifications go head-to-head when North Bend’s Lane Seals and Marshfield’s Caleb Kruse do battle. Their bests this year are both over 44 feet and separated by just one inch.

Girls Pole Vault, 3:30 p.m. Why watch? The pole vault has become one of the top events at the county meet every year. This year should be no different when North Bend’s Sammie Clark faces Marshfield’s Moriah Roberge in a battle of two vaulters who finished second in their respective classifications at the state meet last spring. Bandon’s Beth Castro is among the best in Class 3A, though she hasn’t had a vault of at least 11 feet like the other two.

Boys Javelin, 3:30 p.m. Why watch? Another battle of two of the state’s best, regardless of classification, pits Bandon’s Cole Scherer (season best 180 feet) against Marshfield’s Will Messerle (178-5). Myrtle Point’s Garren Hitner also is entered. Though he hasn’t thrown this year, he’s a past state champion.

Girls Long Jump, 3:30 p.m. Why watch? Worthen will be bouncing back and forth between the long jump runway and the high jump apron. If she gets off a good leap, the meet record will be in jeopardy. Chelsea Standley of Powers also figures to have a strong showing in this event and the sprints.

Girls Discus, 3:30 p.m. Why watch? The leader in the event, North Bend’s Jessianne Heley, could have a future in the heptathlon in college and is one of the most versatile athletes in the meet.

Boys High Jump, 4:30 p.m. Why watch? Seals is trying for a triple crown in the jumps this week, but Marshfield’s Levi Meline, who also plays baseball, cleared 6-2 in a meet Tuesday and has the top mark in the county.

Girls Javelin, 4:30 p.m. Why watch? The top mark in the event belongs to Roberge, but right behind her are two exchange students from Germany — Coquille’s Frauke Fuchs and Hannah Kamps of Marshfield.

Boys Pole Vault, 4:30 p.m. Why watch? North Bend’s Lane Davison has cleared 15 feet, which would match the county record. Greg Eckes has gone over 14-6 for Marshfield. Myrtle Point’s Casey Cagley has cleared 13-6 this spring. All three placed second at their state meet last year.

Girls Shot Put, 4:30 p.m. Why watch? Coquille’s Allison Cook, the county leader in the event, gives a glimpse of the future while battling Heley and Marshfield sophomore Hannah Francis.

Boys Discus, 4:30 p.m. Why watch? NorthBend’s Adams hopes the discus will provide his second title of the night. Marshfield’s Kris Muse hopes to spoil his victory parade.

Girls Triple Jump, 4:30 p.m. Why watch? Only six athletes are entered, but four — Marshfield’s MaKenzie Scott, Bandon’s Juliana Baker, Myrtle Point’s Maria Ciccarelli and North Bend’s Dana Crosby — have jumps over 30 feet.

Boys Long Jump, 4:30 p.m. Why watch? Seals is the clear favorite, with a top jump more than 2 feet better than any of the other entries. He’s won a state title in this, and another in the triple jump.

Opening Ceremony, 5 p.m. Why watch? The county will celebrate the meet’s 100th year with a parade of current and former athletes from the schools and an inspirational speech from former Marshfield standout Julie (Goodrich) Bright, a state champion, college All-American at the Univeristy of Oregon, Olympic team alternate and Pan-Am Games bronze medalist. Other past greats will be introduced throughout the evening and will present awards.

Girls 4x100 Relay, 5:30 p.m. Why watch? Marshfield and North Bend should put on a pretty good race to open the evening on the track.

Boys 4x100 Relay, 5:35 p.m. Why watch? There’s only three teams, and Marshfield has by far the best time, but relays always are entertaining.

Girls 1,500, 5:40 p.m. Why watch? The top eight girls, led by Marshfield’s Jana Sadler, have times separated by just 14 seconds.

Boys 1,500, 5:50 p.m. Why watch? Marshfield’s Jared Bassett is one of the state’s best, but should get quite a test from North Bend’s Trevor Berrian and Steven Garboden.

Girls 100, 6 p.m. Why watch? Coquille’s Katlyn Shaw has made quite an impression in her first year in the sport, and will try to best a field of younger, more experienced, runners. The top time so far belongs to Clark, North Bend’s pole vaulter.

Boys 100, 6:15 p.m. Why watch? The top times belong to athletes from the smaller schools, Myrtle Point’s Claude Wilson and Bandon’s Gregory Puhl.

Girls 400, 6:30 p.m. Why watch? Shaw will test her quick recovery skills as she tries to follow the 100 with this event, where her top time is slightly better than North Bend’s Amanda McMillan.

Boys 400, 6:40 p.m. Why watch? Bandon’s Scherer is a distance standout by trade, but has been limited in workouts while he recovers from Lyme disease. He still has easily the top time in this race.

Girls 100 High Hurdles, 6:50 p.m. Why watch? Worthen had not run this event before Tuesday. Now she has the county’s top time. She’s expected to run it a lot more in college when she becomes a heptathlete. In any other year, Marshfield’s MaKenzie Scott and North Bend’s Miranda Hatcher would be in line for a county title.

Boys 110 High Hurdles, 7 p.m. Why watch? Marshfield’s Kruse only does one jumping event because he’s so good in the hurdles. He’ll get a big test from teammate Blake Kemp, one of the state’s top freshmen.

Girls 800, 7:10 p.m. Why watch? North Bend’s versatile Heley has easily the top mark in this event. She could take gold medals in a throwing event and a distance race.

Boys 800, 7:15 p.m. Why watch? After racing Bassett in the 1,500, Berrian figures to be by himself at the end of this race. He broke the 2-minute barrier for the first time on Saturday. Garboden also should have a solid time.

Girls 200, 7:25 p.m. Why watch? The night’s final sprint will be similar to the first, with Coquille’s Shaw and Standley of Powers against North Bend’s Clark in what could be a tight finish.

Boys 200, 7:35 p.m. Why watch? Myrtle Point’s Wilson has the top time, but North Bend’s Seals has amazing athleticism that hasn’t often been used at this distance.

Girls 300 Low Hurdles, 7:45 p.m. Why watch? Worthen will go for the hurdles sweep in an event she was state champion in last spring. She’s by far the best, but three others — teammate Scott, North Bend’s Kristina Hossley and Coquille’s Fuchs also have solid times.

Boys 300 Intermediate Hurdles, 7:55 p.m. Why watch? Like Worthen, Kruse could be going for a hurdles double. He ranks second in the state for Class 5A after a strong race Saturday at Oregon City.

Girls 3,000, 8 p.m. Why watch? The county doesn’t have the female standouts it had in recent years, but Marshfield’s Sadler and Coquille’s Vanessa Ferrer could put on a good battle.

Boys 3,000, 8:15 p.m. Why watch? This event has been hyped more than any other, for good reason. Though it’s at the end of the meet and seems long (71⁄2 laps), Marshfield’s Bassett and North Bend’s Spenser Lynass have put on incredible shows the last two years. Lynass won when they were sophomores. Bassett won last year. Both are aiming for Dave Gilbert’s record of 8:48.8, and if the conditions are right, there’s no reason to think they can’t get it.

Girls 4x400 Relay, 8:30 p.m. Why watch? Coquille, North Bend and Marshfield all have solid teams, with Shaw and Fuchs giving Coquille firepower.

Boys 4x400 Relay, 8:35 p.m. Why watch? Relays are always fun, and in this one Bandon and North Bend enter with near identical times.

Awards Ceremony, 8:45 p.m. Why watch? The presenter of the outstanding athletes will be Linda Prefontaine, sister of the late Marshfield standout Steve Prefontaine. Major awards include outstanding thrower, jumper and runner for both boys and girls.
