Marshfield’s softball team bounced back from its worst game of the season by beating host Springfield 10-4 in a Midwestern League contest on Wednesday.
“After the game against Churchill, it was a nice comeback,” said Marshfield coach Floyd Montiel. “We had the best first inning we’ve had all year. And we had timely hits, kids coming through on base.”
Marshfield scored five times in the first inning and Brittney Young made the lead stand up, despite allowing 11 hits by the Millers.
Young was one of four Pirates with two hits and scored three times. Jessica Ott had two hits, including a double, scored twice and drove in two runs. Jayla Tavernier had two hits and two RBIs. Brianna George had a triple and single and drove in two runs and Chelsea Burns had two RBIs.
The Pirates improved to 4-3 heading into Friday’s game at last-place Willamette. Springfield fell to 2-5.
BASEBALL
Midwestern League
Pirates fall
Springfield took advantage of three Marshfield errors to score four runs in the first inning on the way to a 7-2 win over the host Pirates on Wednesday.
Marshfield coach Quintin Hall said his team never recovered from that first inning.
Pitcher Levi Meline, in his first outing since the league opener a few weeks ago, did fine, Hall said.
“That was pretty much the first time he’s thrown since Churchill,” Hall said. “He made them put the ball in play. We just didn’t help him out.”
Ryan Campbell had a single and double and scored one of the Pirates’ two runs.
Nonleague
Bulldogs beat Bobcats
North Bend topped visiting Myrtle Point 10-0 in a nonleague game on Wednesday.
Ethan Ottemiller had a double and home run, drove in two runs and scored three times for North Bend. Sean Jany went 3-for-3 with a double; Bryce Weidman had two hits, including a triple; and Bruce Ohlrich also had two hits.
Kale Forrester, Ohlrich and Ottemiller combined on a three-hitter for North Bend.
Panthers win
Gold Beach, playing without its seniors, beat Brookings-Harbor’s junior varsity team 12-2.
Brodey Carpenter had three hits and four RBIs to lead the Panthers on offense. Travis Moore had two hits and three RBIs and Justin Randle scored three runs.
Jake Hatten pitched a four-hitter.
“It was fun,” said Gold Beach coach Greg Brown of the game, a break from the league schedule. “It was a nice evening down here.”
TENNIS
Spartans sweep matches
Marist beat both North Bend and Marshfield by 8-0 scores in a pair of nonleague matches in the Bay Area on Thursday.
The Pirates stretched two of the doubles matches to three sets.
Marshfield’s No. 1 team of Nicole Zyta and Leslie Silver fell to Lisa Goeckel and Madeline Gonyea 4-6, 6-3, 6-5. Nikki Gross and Chloe Danielson also won the first set before dropping the next two at No. 2 doubles. Marshfield’s No. 4 team of sisters Mallory and Alex Crane lost both sets in tiebreakers.
Against North Bend, Marist won every match in straight sets. |
