The following events are scheduled this weekend and later this month on the South Coast.
Today through Saturday Rummage saleCoquille residents are invited to an annual rummage sale from 4 to 6:30 p.m. today; from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday; and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, at the Pioneer United Methodist Church, at the corner of Second Street and Baxter Avenue in Coquille.
There will be a $1-a-bag sale on Saturday.
Friday, Saturday Gallery anniversaryThe Artist Loft Gallery will hold an anniversary celebration from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday.
Members are celebrating the gallery’s first year in its new downstairs location in Pony Village Mall, at the east entrance hallway, 1611 Virginia Ave., North Bend. The gallery has been in business for almost five years.
Cake, punch and music will be provided. The event will include gift drawings and sales. Artists at the gallery will be present throughout the day.
Saturday Rummage saleCoos Bay/North Bend Relay for Life will hold a garage sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday in North Bend. The sale will be at 2480 17th St., near the corner of Oak and 16th streets.
Relay for Life is an effort of the American Cancer Society to remember and honor people who have battled cancer, and to raise money for cancer research.
Martial arts eventA Ken-Ju-Bo-Ai Martial Arts Tournament will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, at Sunset Middle School, 245 S. Camman St., Coos Bay.
Lunch will be provided from noon to 1 p.m.
Music student eventThe first Suzuki method violin book graduation in the Bay Area will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 19, Sunset Hall on the Southwestern Oregon Community College campus, 1988 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay. Nine-year-old Shannon Stein, a North Bay Elementary School third-grader who also studies violin, will be the featured soloist.
Shannon has been instructed since age 6 by local violinist Jackie Cone. Last summer, the youngster began training with Myriam Harvey, a Southwestern strings instructor who is also a certified Suzuki teacher. Since then, Shannon has memorized the contents of Violin Book I, 22 pieces in all.
There is no admission charge for Saturday’s event. A group less will be offered with some of the other Suzuki method students from the area. Refreshments will be served.
Greenacres danceThe South Coast Folk Society’s April Barn Dance will begin with an annual meeting at 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Greenacres Grange, 93393 Green Acres Lane, south of Coos Bay.
Dancing will begin at 7 and goes until 10 p.m., with Curry County band the Langlois Mt. Scottish Fiddlers.
Guest caller and dancing instructor for the evening will be William Watson from Bend.
Admission is $5, $4 for students and seniors. Admission is free for children under 6.

All weekend Egyptian TheatreThe Egyptian Theatre offers different movies each weekend. Here is this weekend’s schedule:
• The mob-themed movie “Goodfellas” (1990), starring Robert De Niro, on Friday;
• The original “Batman” (1989), starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson, on Saturday; and
• The musical-comedy “Barkleys of Broadway” (1949), starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, on Sunday.
Friday and Saturday shows start at 7 p.m., and Sunday shows start at 3 p.m.
The box office opens one hour before showtimes. General admission is $4, $3.50 for seniors and those 12 and under, and $3 for members. All admission for benefit shows is $5.

Sunday Black Irish BandThe Black Irish Band, also known as the Hooligans of Jamestown, will perform at 3 p.m. on Sunday at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St.
The band has a large compliment of traditional maritime and railroad music as well as ethnic tunes in their repertoire of Irish, Italian and American folk music, with an assortment of original songs and traditional western ballads. The band’s musical style captures the spirit of the immigrants of this land, the men and women who tamed the Wild West, a press release said.
Tickets cost $15 and are available at the center’s box office.
Tuesday Chess club fundraiserThe Coquille Chess Club will hold a fundraiser starting at 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 22, at Coquille High School.
The event will include a spaghetti feed. Tickets can be bought at the door, and for $1 visitors, will have the opportunity to play a Coquille Club member.
Coach Nancy Keller plans to have numbered prints of chess art available
for sale, with profits going toward chess club activities.
Later next week Child abuse preventionSouth Coast Education Service District will sponsor parent and community workshops on the prevention and identification of child abuse from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
The Coos and Curry Departments of Human Services will conduct the workshops at the SCESD offices in Coos Bay, at 1350 Teakwood Ave., and in Gold Beach, at 29805 Mary St.

Later this month Choir festivalA choir festival will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, at the First United Methodist Church, 2289 Meade Ave., North Bend.
It will be combined choirs from the North Bend First United Methodist Church, First Presbyterian in Coos Bay, Gloria Dei Lutheran in Coos Bay, St. Monica Catholic Church in Coos Bay and the First Presbyterian Church in Myrtle Point.
Refreshments will be provided, and there will be no admission charged. A free will offering will go to “Teens Unlimited” to provide necessities for homeless teens in Coos County.

Seeking donations Cancer fundraiserThe sixth-annual Messerle barn sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., June 7-8, at 94881 Stock Slough Road. The sale is to raise money for a Coos Bay mother of two fighting breast cancer.
Sellable items can be dropped of at the barn, 94881 Stock Slough Road Coos Bay, at the corner of Stock Slough and Catching Inlet. Monetary donations also will be accepted.
