North Bend’s boys tennis team topped visiting North Eugene 5-3 on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs got wins in three of the singles matches and in the final two doubles matches to take the team victory.
North Bend senior Cody Ferguson kept his season record perfect by beating Andrew Daughtery 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.
Duy Tang and Nathan Kahler also recorded straight-sets singles wins for the Bulldogs.
North Bend’s No. 3 doubles team of Chris Cipolla and Zack Reichenberger won a tough three-set match, while Jeramy Dubisar and Travis Bernardini also won their match.
A story in last Tuesday’s edition of The World incorrectly identified Ferguson as a junior. The standout was state champion as a freshman and runner-up as a sophomore.
Pirates top Highlanders
Marshfield shut out North Eugene 8-0 on Tuesday.
The Highlanders were shorthanded and, as a result, forced to forfeit three singles matches and one doubles match. However North Eugene played several players twice so the Pirates could have exhibition matches.
Jon Massie dominated the lone singles match for Marshfield with sets of 6-0 and 6-1. Zaq Jones had an especially tough exhibition match in No. 2 singles, winning in a third-set super tiebreaker (12-10).
“Zaq worked really hard out there today,” said Marshfield coach Paula Massie.
Rounding out the exhibition singles victories for the Pirates were Jeff Stephens and David Stys.
No. 2 doubles was an exhibition match that saw Jamey Moriarty and David Perrin go into another third-set super tiebreaker, emerging victorious with a 10-5 score in the final set.
Rounding out doubles play were Marshfield winners Brandon Benson and Brogan Trull; Josh Bott and Brealan Mosieur; and Andre Van Rooyen and Michoe Montgomery.
BASEBALL
Far West League
Bulldogs win
North Bend got home runs by Ethan Ottemiller and Skyler Walton and a dominating pitching performance from Bryce Weidman to beat host Brookings-Harbor 15-2 on Tuesday.
Ottemiller and Walton both hit three-run home runs in the fifth inning, when the Bulldogs scored seven runs. Ottemiller also had a double and drove in four runs, while Alex Clark scored four times.
Joe Eszlinger had a two-run double for the Bruins in the fifth inning, after two North Bend errors.
Weidman struck out 12 batters and did not walk any while pitching a four-hitter.
In contrast, Brookings-Harbor pitchers walked 10 batters and hit one.
Vikings win
Tyler Mais hit a home run as Siuslaw beat host Douglas 5-2 on Tuesday.
Mais and Drew Rainwater combined to limit the Trojans to two runs on six hits. Jon Duman drove in the go-ahead run with a sixth-inning double.
Siuslaw kept pace with North Bend at 4-0 in league play.
Lancers top Sutherlin
Bo Yunker pitched a complete-game four-hitter and also had a home run as South Umpqua beat visiting Sutherlin 5-1 on Tuesday. Younker homered in the first inning, helping the Lancers to a quick lead.
Sunset Conference
Bobcats win
Myrtle Point edged Gold Beach 9-8 on Tuesday despite a seventh-inning rally from Gold Beach.
The Bobcats led 9-4 heading into the final inning and barely held on.
“It was a solid team effort for us offensively,” said Myrtle Point coach John Zumwalt. “Almost everybody in the lineup was hitting well.”
Myrtle Point’s Ryan Love had two singles, including a clutch two-out, two-run single in the third inning that built the Bobcats’ lead. Zach Sykes added a two-run double.
Tigers beat Devils
Bandon topped Coquille 9-2 on Tuesday.
Michael Bennett pitched a complete game for the Tigers, allowing five hits, no walks and 12 strikeouts.
Bennett’s teammate, Keith Murray had Bandon’s only extra-base hit with a two-run double in the fourth inning.
John Bindford had a double for Coquille and went 2-for-3 in the game.
SOFTBALL
Far West League
Bruins beat Bulldogs
Brookings-Harbor crushed visiting North Bend 17-0 in five innings Tuesday.
Kara Miller had a triple for the Bruins while teammates Jillian McCool, Brooke Blofsky, Jamie Kay and Breanne Manley all had doubles.
Jessie Goergen pitched a no-hitter for the Bruins.
“I thought we played well,” said Brookings-Harbor coach Steve Padilla.
Lancers edge Sutherlin
South Umpqua scored a run in the eighth inning to beat host Sutherlin 3-2 on Tuesday.
Sutherlin scored twice in the first inning off South Umpqua pitcher Taylor Whitmore, but Whitmore shut down the Bulldogs the rest of the way, allowing just five hits in the game. Whitmore also had a double for South Umpqua, driving in Brittany Bice as part of South Umpqua’s two-run fifth inning.
Bice, who had three hits, scored the winning run in the eighth on a single by Erica Parker.
Sunset Conference
Panthers still perfect
Molly Hockema threw a no-hitter and Gold Beach shut out Myrtle Point 6-0 in Tuesday’s Sunset Conference game to finish the first half of the league season with a perfect 6-0 record.
Despite the loss, Myrtle Point coach John Marquez was pleased with how his team played all seven innings with the Panthers.
“Overall, I was impressed that we went the distance with the No. 1 team,” said Marquez.
He was happy with pitcher Kylee Fischer’s performance as she struck out seven batters.
Hockema dominated on the mound for the Panthers.
“Molly is an excellent pitcher and she shut us down,” Marquez said.
Miranda Hunnicutt went 3-for-4 with one walk for the Panthers. Katherine Zuber and Katie Walling each had doubles for the Panthers while Kayla Zuber went 3-for-4.
“It was a moral Victory. We still lose the game. The girls played tough,” said Marquez. “Kiersten Bouska had been struggling but got the bat on the ball for us.”
Tigers rally
Bandon scored 11 runs in the fourth inning to rally for a 14-7 win over visiting Coquille on Tuesday.
The Red Devils led 7-3 before the Tigers’ big rally.
Ashley O’Grady had two hits for Bandon. Coquille got two hits each by Stephanie Jones, Courtney Davis and Mary Meador.
TRACK & FIELD
Marshfield girls win
Marshfield’s girls beat Churchill 78.5-40.5 in a Midwestern League dual on Tuesday at Eugene. Churchill’s boys won 71-62.
The Pirates used the meet as their final preparation for Friday’s Coos County Meet.
Ali Worthen posted her top mark of the season while winning the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 3 inches, and also won the 200 in a season-best 26.7. She ran the 100-meter hurdles for the first time, winning in 15.6 seconds, which ranks second in Class 5A.
Hannah Francis won the shot put and tied for first in the discus for Marshfield. Shelby Paulson won the long jump and 800. The Pirates also got wins by Hannah Kamps (javelin), Moriah Roberge (pole vault), Jana Sadler (1,500) and MaKenzie Scott (300-meter hurdles).
Jared Bassett won the 3,000 meters in a season-best 9 minutes, 12.4 seconds, for the Pirates. He also ran a lifetime best 2:00.6 while finishing second in the 800. Levi Meline cleared an impressive 6-2 to win the high jump.
Caleb Kruse won the 200 and high hurdles for the Pirates. Marshfield’s other wins came from Blake Kemp (300 hurdles), Greg Eckes (pole vault), John Rymer (triple jump), Bo Cutting (shot put), Kris Muse (discus) and Will Messerle (javelin).
BOYS GOLF
Bruins finish on top
Brookings-Harbor extended its season lead in the Far West League golf standings by winning the league match at Salmon Run, the Bruins’ home course, on Monday.
Brookings-Harbor’s Jed Warren was medalist for the day with a 75 and the Bruins also had the next three best scores while posting a team score of 319. North Bend was second at 347.
Through three tournaments, the Bruins lead with 977 strokes, while North Bend is second with 1,056. The top team after the five regular-season matches earns one of the league’s berths for the state tournament, with the other determined at the district championships.
North Bend’s Seth Johnson and Jordan Waddington tied for fifth Monday by shooting 83.
Pirates first
Marshfield won a match of mixed junior varsity and varsity teams at Coos Country Club on Tuesday, shooting a 351. Jake Graves of the Pirates was medalist with a 79.
GIRLS GOLF
Braves win
Reedsport claimed an eight-stroke victory over Sutherlin in a match at Myrtle Creek Golf Course on Monday.
The Braves shot 446 to win the match, led by Heather Parker’s 91. That score was good for medalist honors on the day.
