Prep Recap for April 15: Marshfield golfers tie for fourth at Eugene tourney

Marshfield’s boys golf team beat the rest of the Midwestern League squads while tying for fourth place in a meet that also featured the Southwest Conference and Marist in the Eugene Country Club Invitational on Monday.
Marist won the event with a score of 315, while Sheldon scored 319. South Eugene had 327, while the Pirates and North Medford tied with 333. Thurston, the second team from the Midwestern League, shot 340.
Marshfield’s Trevor Smith tied for third place overall with a 76. Sheldon’s Nic Polski took medalist honors with a 74.
GIRLS GOLF
Pirates eighth
Marshfield’s girls finished eighth in the Eugene Country Club Invitational on Monday, but were first among Midwestern League schools.
Nicole Nguyen shot a 99 to lead the Pirates, and was one of just 14 players from among the 14 schools to break 100. South Eugene’s Sophie Elstrott shot a 79 to take medalist honors.
North Bend finished 10th in the tournament, led by Michelle Schultz and Hayley McKinley, who both shot 108.

Lancers rally past Marshfield
Churchill scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat visiting Marshfield 9-8 on Monday.
Justin St. Clair had a two-run double with two outs to score the winning runs for the Lancers.
The Pirates rallied from an early 5-1 deficit by scoring seven times in the fifth inning, but couldn’t hold on.
Brad Birch had two home runs and Ben Straka also homered for the Lancers.
Churchill’s rally started with two outs.
After an error, Marshfield coach Quintin Hall intentionally walked Birch, who was robbed of a home run his first at-bat Monday before blasting two long balls, and who also had homered in Marshfield’s first game against the Lancers.
“I took my chances,”said Hall, noting that Thurston’s next batter had been 0-for-3 in the game before singling in the seventh inning.
“Who are you going to pitch to?”
St. Clair then hit his game-winning double.
“It’s disappointing, but we were down 5-zip,”Hall said. “You look back, and we had our opportunities.”
Adam Reed was 3-for-4 for the Pirates, including a double, and had two RBIs.
Marshfield also benefited from seven walks and five hit batters. Churchill walked five batters, hit two and committed an error in the Pirates’ big inning.
“I feel bad for the kids,”Hall said. “We’ll regroup and go at it Wednesday.”
The Pirates host Springfield on Wednesday and travel to Willamette on Friday.
Sunset Conference
Wildcats top Braves
Glide pounded out 12 hits and beat host Reedsport 14-4 on Monday.
Josh Husky had three hits, scored three times and drove in two runs for the Wildcats. Brandon Belloir had two hits and three RBIs and Levin Bonnell had two hits and three runs.
Reedsport pitchers issued seven walks and hit three batters and the Braves committed five errors on defense, but Reedsport coach Todd Harrington said Glide’s hitting was the difference.
“That’s the best-hitting team we’ve seen all year,” Harrington said.
Kyle Fields pitched a complete game, striking out 10 Reedsport hitters.
Travis Leach had two hits, including a three-run home run in the fourth inning for Reedsport. Cory Christoffersen had three hits, including a double, for the Braves.

Churchill tops Pirates
Churchill struck for seven runs in the second inning and six more in the fourth and beat host Marshfield 15-2 on Monday.
Jessica Plummer had three doubles for the Lancers, while Sierra Lessel had a double and a triple. Churchill pounded out 18 hits in the game.
“They were absolutely hitting rockets,” Marshfield coach Floyd Montiel said.
After their biggest win of the season, over North Eugene on Friday, Marshfield was flat against the Lancers.
“It was our worst display of the year,” Montiel said. “Defensively, we looked just confused.”
The Pirates scored both their runs in the second inning, when Jayla Tavernier walked, Briana George singled, Taylor Scott hit an RBI double and Chelsea Burns added a sacrifice fly.
The Pirates will try to bounce back Wednesday, when they face Springfield. Churchill is 6-0, North Eugene 4-2 and Marshfield 3-3. Springfield and Thurston both have two wins.
“Churchill is on their own,” Montiel said. “Everyone else is in a dogfight for second and third.”

Wildcats beat Braves
Glide built a 10-0 lead and cruised to a 10-5 win over host Reedsport on Tuesday in a battle for second place in the Sunset Conference.
The Wildcats improved to 5-1 at the midway point of the league season, while Reedsport fell to 4-2.
Angela Bryant had four hits and Lacey Maher had two doubles for the Wildcats.
Stephanie Clardy had an RBI double as part of a four-run sixth inning for the Braves. Lindsay Holden scored twice.
“We didn’t show up to play until the sixth inning,” Reedsport coach Casey Howard said. “We just didn’t play well.”
