Prep Recap for April 14: Reavis wins two events in Roseburg

North Bend and Siuslaw athletes combined to win several events against mostly larger schools in the 22-team Roseburg Twilight Meet on Saturday.

Siuslaw’s Alexis Reavis won both the shot put, with an effort of 39 feet, 6 inches, and the discus (114-2) and also tied for sixth in the high jump and finished ninth in the javelin.

North Bend’s Miranda Hatcher was second in the high hurdles, while Sammy Clark tied for second in the pole vault.

North Bend’s Lane Davison won the pole vault, clearing 15 feet, while teammate Lane Seals won the triple jump with a leap of 44-31⁄2 and also finished fourth in the long jump (20-8).

Siuslaw’s Travis Stevens won the 1,500 meters with a time of 4 minutes, 6.13 seconds, which leads all Class 4A runners, according to the track and field Web site athletic.net. North Bend’s Trevor Berrian broke the 2-minute barrier in the 800 meters for the first time, clocking 1:59.22 to finish seventh. He is ranked first in Class 4A.

Willamette Falls Invitational

Caleb Kruse had a big day, winning both hurdles races for Marshfield at the Willamette Falls Invitational at Oregon City on Saturday.

Kruse had the top Class 5A time in the state in the 300-meter hurdles with his mark of 40.75, and won the high hurdles in 15.53, which ranks second for Class 5A. He also finished second in the triple jump, leaping 43-10.

The only win for Marshfield’s girls in the 15-school meet came in the pole vault, where Moriah Roberge cleared 11 feet.

Two of the Pirates’ top athletes, seniors Jared Bassett and Ali Worthen, did not make the trip because of the Mr. MHS pageant, which was Saturday night.

Glide Invitational

Reedsport’s Ismael Osorio and Jason Fishel and Chelsea Standley of Powers won events at the 20-school Glide Invitational on Saturday.

Osorio won the shot put with an effort of 49-10 and also finished third in the discus with a toss of 143-3.

Fishel won the long jump, soaring 20-2, and also placed fifth in the 100.

Standley won the long jump for the Cruisers with a leap of 15-31⁄2.  She also finished third in both the 100 (13.64) and 200 (28.59).

Cascade Christian swept the team titles.

Brookings-Harbor Rotary

Gold Beach freshman Sydney Snook lowered her Class 3A-leading times in both the 1,500 and 3,000 at the Brookings-Harbor rotary meet, with times of 4:55.52 for the 1,500 and 10:49.69 for the 3,000.

Nathan Moore won both the 200 (23.52) and 400 (52.06) for Gold Beach’s boys. Bandon’s Cole Scherer won the javelin (172-9) and was second in the 400 (52.46).

California schools won both team titles, with Del Norte’s girls finishing first and South Fork’s boys winning their side.

BASEBALL

Sunset Conference

Bobcats fall

Cascade Christian scored a run in the eighth inning to beat visiting Myrtle Point 6-5 in a Sunset Conference game on Saturday.

Brandon Hauser drove in the winning run in the eighth inning.

Jeremy Cheney, Wes Litton and Jordan Banks each had two hits for the Challengers. Nic Canaday had a pair of doubles for the Bobcats.

Wildcats beat Bandon

Glide kept its league record perfect by beating host Bandon 7-4 on Saturday. The Wildcats then won a nonleague game, 3-0.

Jeff Jackson picked up the win in the opener for Glide, which had just four hits, but took advantage of four Bandon errors.

Connor Jackson and Jimmy Mack combined on a one-hitter for the Tigers in the nightcap, but Bandon couldn’t manage any runs on offense. Josh Husky had a two-run double for Glide.

Nonleague

Bulldogs take two

North Bend swept visiting Cottage Grove 6-4 and 5-1 in a nonleague doubleheader on Saturday.

Alex Clark had a big day, with three hits, including a double, in the opener and a complete game five-hitter on the mound with just one walk in the nightcap. Clark had two hits in that game.

Bryce Weidman had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs in the first game. Josh Hampton, Dalton Iveans and winning pitcher Ethan Ottemiller also had doubles as the Bulldogs pounded out 13 hits.

SOFTBALL

Sunset Conference

Challengers top Bobcats

Cascade Christian swept a doubleheader from visiting Myrtle Point, taking a Sunset Conference league game 8-2 and then winning a nonleague game 16-0.

Leah Weakley pitched a three-hitter for the Challengers in the counting game.

In the second game, Myrtle Point used its younger pitchers and Cascade Christian pounced for 16 runs on 12 hits.

Kylee Fischer had a double in each game for the Bobcats.

Glide beats Bandon

Glide topped host Bandon 6-1 in a Sunset Conference game on Saturday, then beat the Tigers 11-10 in a non-counting game.

Glide took advantage of eight Bandon errors to score five unearned runs in the opener. Ashley O’Grady had a double for Bandon.

The two teams used younger pitchers in the second game, when the squads combined for 26 hits.

Panthers sweep Tigers

Gold Beach took a pair of nonleague games from host Junction City on Saturday.

Molly Hockema pitched a three-hitter in the opener, a 3-1 Gold Beach win. Hockema had 11 strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Kourtney Moore picked up the win on the mound and had two hits at the plate as Gold Beach won 5-3. Kayla Rauschert hit a home run for Junction City.
