The following events and activities are scheduled this week and later this month on the South Coast.
Wednesday Engineers to meet The Southwest Oregon Chapter of the Professional Engineers of Oregon will host a meeting Wednesday at the Red Lion Hotel, 1313 N. Bayshore Drive, Coos Bay.
Social time begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner and the scheduled presenters. A no-host dinner is available from the menu.
The speaker will be Steve Purchase, assistant director of the Land Management Division of the Oregon Department of State Lands. Purchase will talk about three issues involving the Elliott State Forest Habitat Conservation Plan, fill lands along the Coos Bay waterfront and its impact to land ownership, and removal of the New Carissa shipwreck.
Purchase is responsible for the day-to-day property management and real estate actions on approximately 4 million acres of Common School Fund lands including rangelands, forestlands, waterways, mineral rights and special interest.

Thursday Lakeside association The Lakeside Community Association will meet at 6 p.m. on Thursday at the Lakeside Lions Hall, 890 Bowron Road.

Friday Art exhibit The Coos Art Museum will exhibit “Images of Nature” starting this Friday. The exhibit is a collection of watercolors and pastels by Kimberly Wurster, winner the Peoples Choice Award at the Coos Art Museum Biennial.
The artist will be at an opening reception between 5 and 7 p.m. on Friday, April 25, at the museum, 235 Anderson Ave., Coos Bay.
School carnival Bunker Hill Elementary School’s “Out of this World” Carnival will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday at the school, 62858 U.S. Highway 101, Coos Bay.
Food and game booth tickets are 25 cents each or 5 for $1. There will be a shuttle bus from 5:15 to 8:45 in the back parking lot of Fred Meyer. Booths will include bingo, bowling, face painting, a cake walk and a dance room.
Proceeds will go to Kid College, T-shirts and field trips.
Friday, Saturday Dance club eventsDancers are invited to a South Coast Chapter of USADance Association workshop on Friday at the First United Methodist Church, 123 Ocean Blvd., Coos Bay.
A waltz lesson will run from 7 to 8 p.m. Open dancing will follow until approximately 9:30 p.m., and will include practice time for waltz. Bonnie Prater from Newport will teach the lesson.
The cost is $3 for members and students, and $6 for nonmembers.
On Saturday, April 19, there will be another workshop on the waltz at the Epiphany & Co. Ballroom, 1989 Sherman Ave., in North Bend. The class will run from 1 to 4 p.m., with Prater also leading this class. The cost is $25 for members and students, and $30 for nonmembers. For those who plan to attend the workshop, the dance on the previous night is free.
Saturday Boy Scout fundraiser Boy Scout Troop No. 761 will hold a garage sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at College Park Community Church, 2548 Newmark St., North Bend.
Donations are needed. Organizers can pick them up.

Young Author’s Tea The local Driftwood Council of the Oregon Reading Association will host a Young Author’s Tea from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Coos Bay Public Library, 525 Anderson Ave.
All work will be on display in the Myrtlewood Room at Coos Bay Public Library. An open mike will be available for any students to read from their own work. The Driftwood Council and the Friends of the Coos Bay Public Library will provide coffee, tea, punch and snacks.
Wool spinners No Lazy Kates will spin wool at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Wool Company, 990 Highway 101, Bandon. Visitors are welcome. For information, those interested can call 347-3115.
Silverhawk in concert Portland-based Silverhawk brings “psychedelic Americana rock and roll” to Southwestern Oregon Community College for an all-ages concert at 8 p.m. on Saturday in Prosper Hall, 1988 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay.
The concert is being put on in conjunction with the Spring Preview weekend for potential Southwestern students and will benefit the Oregon Coast Community Action South Coast Food Share.
The band began as a folk duo from Coos Bay, featuring brothers Sam Densmore and John Densmore, who take turns on bass, guitar and vocals. Other band members include Rob Allison, a Coos Bay native, on drums and vocals, as well as Anthony Cotham on keyboards and vocals, and guest vocalist Laura Densmore.
Admission is $5 along with a can of food to be donated to the South Coast Food Share. Southwestern students get in free with a student identification card.
Pistol River concert The Pistol River Concert Association will host 3 Leg Torso at 8 p.m. on Saturday at the Pistol River Friendship Hall.
3 Leg Torso formed in 1996 as a violin, cello and accordion trio.

Mushroom seminarThe Wild Rivers Mushroom Club of Brookings-Harbor will host a seminar entitled “Medicinal Mushrooms - How to Identify and Use Them” from 12:30 to 4 p.m., on Saturday. The event will be held at the Chetco Grange Community Center, on the corner of U.S. Highway 101 and Zimmerman Lane in Harbor.
The featured speaker will be Eric Cerecedes, owner of a small company near O’Brien in the Illinois Valley called “Mushroom Way.” The cost is $3.

Sunday MP church dedicationThe First Christian Church of Myrtle Point will hold a dedication service at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday at the church’s new building, 511 Sixth St.

Later this month Relay for Life training A Relay for Life Team Captain University is planned for 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, at the Red Lion Hotel, 1313 N. Bayshore Drive, Coos Bay.
This event is for current team captains or co-captains or for those interested in becoming a team captain or co-captain next year.
The class will spell out what it means to be a team captain, what to expect and what is expected. RSVP is required.

Boat safety exams The U.S. Coast Guard and the Sheriff’s Department Marine Deputies will conduct free annual vessel safety exams starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, at Englund Marine in Charleston.
