North Bend broke out the offense to sweep the first Friday doubleheader of the Far West League baseball season, beating host Sutherlin 11-1 and 9-2.

North Bend had 15 hits in the opener. Bryce Weidman was 3-for-4, including a home run. He scored three runs and drove in two. Andrew Slack was 3-for-4 with a run and three RBIs. Alex Clark was 2-for-4 with three runs scored, while Skyler Walton, Ethan Ottemiller and Josh Hampton all had two hits. Starting pitcher Kale Forrester struck out 11 Sutherlin batters and also hit a home run.

In the second game, North Bend had 12 hits. Clark and Slack each had two hits and scored twice, while Hampton had a three-run home run in the fifth inning to break open a 4-2 game.

North Bend improved to 3-0 in league play.

“We hit the ball really well and Kale pitched really well,” said North Bend coach Brad Horning, adding that his team’s pitching was solid again in the second game with Bruce Ohlrich on the mound.

“Bruce did a really good job,” he said.

Bruins, Trojans split

Tyler Parke pitched a four-hitter to lead Brookings-Harbor to a 6-3 win and a split of a doubleheader at Douglas.

Fred Corpening had two hits, including a double, while Parke brought in the tying run with a double and scored the winning run on a wild pitch.

Douglas won the opener 12-2.

Sunset Conference

Panthers win

Mitch McDonald pitched a five-inning no-hitter and also had a perfect day at the plate as Gold Beach beat host Coquille 16-0 in the lone Sunset Conference game played Friday.

McDonald hit four batters and walked two, and also struck out seven in the win.

At the plate, he went 3-for-3 with a triple and RBI and scored four times.

Garrett Hoffman had a double and triple, scored three times and drove in four runs for the Panthers.

Midwestern League

Pirates fall

Marshfield lost a home run derby to visiting North Eugene on Friday, falling 13-5.

The teams combined for five homers in the game.

North Eugene led from the start, scoring seven runs in the opening inning.

“We didn’t play very well to start off with and we didn’t make some plays, but they hit the ball,” said Marshfield coach Quintin Hall.

The Highlanders had just one strikeout and pounded out 16 hits in the game.

Scott Womack had two doubles and a home run, while Jr. Haase and Austin Montoya also hit homers.

After the first inning, the Pirates settled down and started making plays, Hall said.

Marshfield also got some production on offense.

Brandon Wright and Gatlon Giorgis hit home runs, while Wright, Adam Reed and Jesse McClintock had two hits each.

“Iwas happy we were able to stretch it to seven innings,”Hall said of the game.

He again credited his players for having a never-give-up attitude.

Marshfield visits Churchill on Monday.

SOFTBALL

Sunset Conference

Yeiter perfect

Emmie Yeiter threw a six-inning perfect game, leading Gold Beach to an 11-0 Sunset Conference win over host Coquille.

“She threw strikes and did a good job,” said Gold Beach coach Jerry Ross of Yeiter, who struck out seven during the game.

Kourtney Moore and Miranda Hunnicutt each had two hits and two runs for the Panthers, who stayed perfect in league play. Kelsey Hamilton added a double.

Far West League

Bruins sweep Trojans

Jessie Goergen pitched a pair of shutouts and Brookings-Harbor swept visiting Douglas 4-0 and 2-0 on Friday.

The Trojans had just five hits in the two games, including two by Courtney Bush in the opener.

Brooke Blofsky had two hits, scored a run and drove in another in the opening game for the Bruins. Goergen drove in both runs in the nightcap with a third-inning double, one of two she hit during the game.

Sutherlin takes two

Sutherlin swept host NorthBend 10-0 and 12-1 in a league doubleheader.

Mikayla Mendenhall pitched a two-hitter for Sutherlin in the opener and Amanda Hutchings hit a home run.

Melissa Swagerty and Emalee Lincoln had the hits for NorthBend.

In the second game, Hannah Kasal pitched for Sutherlin. She limited North Bend to five hits in the game.

Lincoln had an RBI single to drive in Katherine Nicholls for NorthBend’s run in the second game.Nicholls led off the first inning with a single and moved up on an out and a wild pitch.

Lancers sweep Vikings

SouthUmpqua kept its league record perfect by sweeping host Siuslaw 18-0 and 11-0 on Friday.
