Outdoors Briefs: Hunter education day planned for May 3 at MPGun Club

Coos County Hunter Education, with help and support from Tioga Oregon Hunters Association, Myrtle Point Gun Club, Tioga Mountain Men and Oregon Mt. Arrows will be offering their second-annual Youth Day.
The event will be held on May 3, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Myrtle Point Gun Club. Youth between the ages of 7 and 17 will be given the opportunity to shoot shotguns, muzzle loaders and 22 rifles, as well as trying archery and a laser-shot computer system.
The event is designed to provide youth the opportunity to try new things and get the proper instructions from trained instructions.
Applications can be picked up at Coos Bay Bi-Mart, local schools, Oregon Mt. Arrows and Coos Bay Firearms. To receive an application by mail, those interested can call Marcey Fullerton at 267-2577. Registration is required in advance and must be in by April 25.
Oregon State Police will be on hand with Scruffy, the agency’s decoy deer, and officials from the Department of Fish and Wildlife will be available to answer questions.
3-D trail shoot Sunday
The Tioga Archery Club has scheduled a 3-D trail fun shoot to be held at the Roseburg Rod and Gun Club facility near Winchester.
The shoot is schedules for Sunday, April 13, with registration from 7 to 11 a.m. The entry fees will be $20 for a family, $16 for a couple, $10 per adult, $4 for youths 13-17 and free for cubs/peewees.

Trails partnership to meet
The Coos Regional Trails Partnership will hold its next meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the U.S. Bureau of Land Management office, 1300 Airport Lane, in North Bend.
Among the agenda items is a discussion on the group’s mission and whether it needs to change.
Vessel safety exams
The U.S. Coast Guard and the Sheriff’s Department Marine Deputies will conduct free annual vessel safety exams starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, at Englund Marine in Charleston.

Marine Board boaters class
The U.S. Coast Guard will teach an eight-hour Oregon State Marine Board class at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, at the Coast Guard Motor Lifeboat Station in Charleston.
As of 2008, everyone 70 years old and younger is required to take the Oregon Mandatory Boater Education Program to operate a powerboat greater than 10 horsepower. It also is required for anyone ages 12 to 15 to operate any size of powerboat. The class is free, and materials cost $15.

Gem club to meet
The Far West Lapidary & Gem Society will meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15, at the Faith Lutheran Church, 2741 Sherman Ave., North Bend.
The meeting will be a social event in combination with workshop activities that include stone identification, the art of wire wrapping and beading, as well as the cutting, grinding and polishing of stones.
Anyone interested in the lapidary arts is welcome to attend the club’s meetings. The club meets on the first and third Tuesday of the month except in December.

Kiwanis bike ride
The 12th-annual Kiwanis Doernbecher Bicycle Tour will be held on Saturday, May 17, and will benefit Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, which treats 80-percent of all Oregon children who have cancer.
The 61-mile bike ride begins and ends at Sturdivant Park in Coquille, with the turnaround at Frona Park in Dora, where lunch will be provided. Riders are asked to register by May 1 and try to raise $100 by getting donations that can be turned in the day of the tour.
