By Staff Reports
Friday, April 11, 2008 | No comments posted.
North Bend’s girls won eight of the 17 events to take the team title in a four-school meet that also included Douglas, Brookings-Harbor and Hidden Valley on Thursday.
Sammie Clark was the only Bulldog to win two events, taking both the 100 meters and pole vault.
North Bend’s Miranda Hatcher moved up to No. 2 in Class 4A in the 100-meter hurdles with her time of 16.54 seconds. Brooke Davison won the triple jump and Kayla Yokbay took the javelin for the Bulldogs.
The other individual win for North Bend was by Jessianne Heley, who performed well in a recent heptathlon. Heley won the 3,000 meters, finished second in the long jump and was third in the discus.
Hidden Valley’s Mary Bailey won the long jump and 200 meters, while Emily James of Douglas took both the 400 and 800.
Hidden Valley won the boys title with 100 points, while North Bend was second with 78.5.
The top event was the 1,500 meters, where Spenser Lynass crossed the line in 4 minutes, 10.82 seconds, to edge teammate Trevor Berrian (4:11.55) and Hidden Valley’s Connor Kasler (4:11.88). Those are the top three times in the state this year for Class 4A, according to the track and field Web site athletic.net.
The only double-winners for the boys were Hidden Valley’s Dustin Fox in the 100 and 200, and Kevin Godfrey of Douglas in the long jump and high hurdles. Godfrey’s mark of 20 feet, 1⁄4 inches in the long jump was one of the better field event efforts, along with throwers Elliot Adams of North Bend in the shot put (48-53⁄4) and Michael Ruppert of Douglas in the discus (151-5). Adams and Ruppert lead Class 4A in those events.
North Bend’s Steven Garboden won the 800 meters by 10 seconds with his time of 2:05.67.
The Bulldogs will be back in action Saturday at Roseburg’s twilight invitational.

Colts edge Pirates
Thurston catcher Emily Dement doubled and scored the game’s only run on a one-out single by Chloe Alverson in the ninth inning to give the Colts a 1-0 win over visiting Marshfield in a Midwestern League softball game Thursday.
“We had our chances,” said Marshfield coach Floyd Montiel.
The Pirates had runners on second and third with one out in the sixth and had two straight batters strike out. In the eighth, Marshfield had a runner on second with no outs and couldn’t get anything going offensively.
“Defensively, we did OK,” Montiel said. “Offense is still our weak spot.
“Now we’ve got to turn right around and play North Eugene.”
The Pirates host the Highlanders today.

Braves win
Stephanie Clardy clubbed her second fence-clearing home run of the season to highlight an 8-0 win for Reedsport over Cascade Christian in a Sunset Conference game Thursday.
Clardy, who also had a double, smashed the ball over the center field fence in the fourth inning.
“That home run was beautiful,” said Reedsport coach Casey Howard.
Brianna Ekelund also had two hits for Reedsport, including a double, and scored a run.
Tailor Nunn pitched an eight-hit shutout with five strikeouts for the Braves.
Bobcats fall
Riddle shut out visiting Myrtle Point 6-0 in a nonleague game Thursday.
The Bobcats managed just one hit, a single by Courtney Love.
“They were a good team, well-disciplined and well-coached,” said Myrtle Point coach John Marquez.
Because the game didn’t count in the standings, Marquez tried some new things, including starting freshman Jessie Chytka on the mound. The result was five Riddle runs in the first two innings, with the help of seven walks.
After that, Myrtle Point senior Kylee Fischer shut the Irish down, allowing just a run in the fifth inning.
In a good switch, the Bobcats were solid on defense, with just two errors.
“The defense was great,” Marquez said. “We were averaging six errors a game.”
The Bobcats return to league play on Saturday when they visit Cascade Christian.
BASEBALL
Braves fall
Cascade Christian pitchers Ryan Pech and Wes Litton limited Reedsport to five hits and struck out 10 batters in a 5-2 victory over the host Braves in a Sunset Conference game Thursday.
Josh Artale had two hits, including a double, and Ryder West had two hits and drove in two runs for the Challengers.
Cory Christoffersen had two hits, including an RBI triple in the seventh inning, for the Braves. Christoffersen scored Reedsport’s other run in the seventh. Alex Titjen also had two hits for Reedsport.
BOYS TENNIS
Pirates tie Churchill and Marist
Marshfield matched Midwestern League powerhouse Churchill, tying the Lancers 4-4 in a match at Eugene on Tuesday. The Pirates also played to a 4-4 tie with Marist.
Against Churchill, the Pirates got singles wins by Zaq Jones and David Stys and also took victories in the first two doubles matches, by the teams of Brogan Trull and Brandon Benson, and David Perrin and Jamey Moriarty.
The victory by Jones came down to a third-set tiebreaker.
Marshfield coach Paula Massie switched the lineup some for the match with Marist, putting Jones and Markus Boesl into doubles after they had played singles in the earlier match.
Jeff Stephens, who switched into Jones’ spot in the singles lineup, won his match, as did Jon Massie and Stys.
In Doubles, Marshfield’s only win came from Perrin and Markus Boesl.
Massie suffered his first league loss against Churchill star Chris Wiechert.
“Jon played well, despite the score,” she said of the 6-1, 6-1 match. “There were a lot of deuce points which could have gone either way.”
Paula Massie said Marist was much improved from an earlier match against the Pirates.
“The Pirates battled well after being discouraged with the tie against Churchill,” Massie said. “I was very proud of them.”
