Seattle closer resumes throwing in rehab

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Mariners closer J.J. Putz made 61 throws on level ground Wednesday, the first time he’s thrown since injuring his right ribcage in the ninth inning of a game April 1 against Texas.
Putz made 18 of the throws from the stretch position at about 60 feet. It hasn’t been determined when he will work off a bullpen mound.
“Everything was a positive,” Mariners manager John McLaren said. “He feels good and was real happy with his throwing. We’ll see how he feels tomorrow and continue the program.”
Putz will have at least one more session on level ground before his status is evaluated.
“We’re just taking the safe approach more than an aggressive approach,” McLaren said.
McLaren is not sure if Putz will be ready to come off the DL when eligible next week.
Putz is 0-1 with one save in two games this season. He went 6-1 with 40 saves and an 1.38 ERA in 68 games last year.
