Former North Bend star Kelcy McKenna was named the Pac-10 women’s tennis player of the week for No. 12 Arizona State University recently.

McKenna earned the award for her strong performance against California and Stanford universities, which included a big win over two-time NCAA Champion Susie Babos. She followed up that performance with two more wins against University of Washington, one at the No. 2 singles and one at the No. 2 doubles.

Those matches stretched McKenna’s winning streak to 15 straight singles and doubles wins. The Sun Devils finish out Pac-10 play with five straight road matches before the Pac-10 Championships on April 24.

Kim Jasmer, University of Washington swimming

Former North Bend High School star Kim Jasmer concluded her junior season for the University of Washington’s women’s swim team by helping the Huskies to a 12th-place finish and 112 points at the NCAA Championships on March 20-22. The point total broke Washington’s previous school record, as did the 400-yard medley relay team. Jasmer and three of her teammates completed the race in 3 minutes and 16 seconds, which earned them ninth place. Jasmer also swam for the Huskies’ 800-yard freestyle relay team that finished in 12th place. Individually, Jasmer took 36th place in the 500-yard freestyle, the same event that she won her first Pac-10 title in earlier in the season. After the championships, Jasmer was named to the Pac-10 all-academic honorable mention team for the second straight year.

Aubrey Vaughn, PSU golf

Former Reedsport High School standout Aubrey Vaughn is having a solid freshman eason on Portland State University’s women’s golf team. Recently, Vaughn contributed to the Vikings 15th-place finish at the Kitahara Fresno State Invitational in late February. Vaughn shot a 162 for the tournament. Portland State will next be competing at the Peg Barnard California Collegiate at the Stanford Golf Course on April 11 and 12.

WOU baseball

Former Myrtle Point High School standout Scott Buche has been contributing to the Western Oregon University baseball team this spring. After his first season as a redshirt punter on the Wolves football team, Buche has taken a relief role on the Wolves pitching staff. He has pitched six innings in five appearances, giving up four walks while recording three strikeouts. Buche also has hit .238 with two doubles in 21 plate appearances.

Oregon track and field

Former North Bend standout Ashley McCrea has begun her junior season for the University of Oregon track and field team. McCrea, who is ranked sixth all-time in women’s javelin for the Ducks, had a strong performance at the Pepsi Invitational on April 5. She threw her way to a fourth-place finish with a mark of 154-feet nine-inches and has qualified for the NCAA West Regionals. Her teammate Leah Worthen, a former Marshfield High School star, ran the second leg on Oregon’s 4x100-and 4x400-meter relays that took first and second, respectively. Worthen also placed fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 56.81. The Ducks will take a weekend off and resume action again on April 18-20, at the Mount SAC Relays.

Willamette track

Former Myrtle Point High School standout Danielle Barnett has begun her freshman season on the Willamette University women’s track team. At the Charles Bowles Spring Break Classic, Barnett finished 10th in the 100 meters with a time of 13.59. She also placed 11th in the long jump. She anchored the 4x100-meter relay in the Willamette Invitational on April 4.

Brothers Adam and Kyle Kotaich from Siuslaw also are competing for Willamette. Recently at the Willamette Invitational, Kyle placed sixth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3-minutes and 59 seconds, while Adam took 36th in the 5,000-meter race in 15:43.

Freshman Trevor May, also a former Siuslaw star, has made an immediate impact on the team, finishing ninth in the decathlon at the Northwest Conference multi-event championships. May had a solid day in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing fourth with a time of 16.07. Wrapping up the former South Coast standouts is Chris Platano of Myrtle Point High School. Platano, who also is a sophomore, has experienced early success in the 1,500-meter run finishing in 4:04 at the Willamette Invitational, good for 17th place.

Linfield track and field

Former Siuslaw standout Gabe Haberly placed 10th in the Northwest Conference decathlon for Linfield’s track team. Haberly, who also participates on the college’s football team, won the pole vault with a mark of 14-feet 51⁄2 inches, and a second-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 161-1. Other events in the decathlon are the 100-meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400 meters, 110-meter hurdles, discus throw and 1,500-meter run. Former Brookings-Harbor athlete Morgan Kocher also competes for the Wildcats.
