Marshfield got a dominant pitching performance from Brittney Young and two big innings to beat Willamette 8-0 and improve to 2-1 in the Midwestern League softball season.

Young gave up just two hits while striking out six and not walking any hitters.

“Brittney’s pitching really well,” said Marshfield coach Floyd Montiel. “When she can get (shortstop) Brianna (George) a lot of balls on the ground, that’s a good combination.”

Willamette pitcher Aysia Coelho matched Young in not giving up any runs until the fourth inning.

Young started Marshfield’s half of the fourth with a single and George sacrificed her to second. Jessica Ott walked and Chelsea Burns hit a double to the fence in left-center, driving in both Young and Ott. After Kayla Lyche walked and Deidra Stewart had a perfect sacrifice bunt, Burns scored on a Willamette error.

Marshfield added four runs in the sixth. Lyche and Natalie Caffey singled and Tiffany Wiley had a sacrifice bunt. After Stacy Smith walked, Jayla Tavernier hit a hard ball that the Wolverines mishandled, allowing two runs to score. Young and Ott added RBI singles.

“We did some good things today,” Montiel said. “It was nice to get some good hits and runs.”

The Pirates visit Thurston on Wednesday and host North Eugene on Friday to complete the first of three rounds of league play.

BASEBALL

Pirates fall

Marshfield dropped a 9-8 decision to Willamette in Eugene on Monday.

Levi Meline hit a lead-off home run in the seventh inning to pull Marshfield within a run and the Pirates got two more runners on base, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

Marshfield had a productive day on offense, getting 12 hits to just seven for the Wolverines.

Cody Slack and Jesse McClintock each had two hits and two RBIs, while Meline and Adam Reed each also had two hits.

The Pirates fell to 1-2 in league play heading into Wednesday’s home game against Thurston.

Bruins win again

Brookings-Harbor edged host North Bend by one shot in the second match of the Far West League regular season Monday at Coos Country Club.

The Bruins finished with 341 strokes, to 342 for North Bend.

Brookings-Harbor’s Jed Warren and North Bend’s Jordan Waddington tied for medalist honors with scores of 79.

The team order was the same as the first league meet. The top team after the five regular-season matches will get one of the league’s two berths to the state tournament, with the other decided at the district tournament.

Brookings-Harbor holds a 51-stroke edge over North Bend after two tournaments, with Siuslaw another 44 shots back.

Siuslaw had a 362 Monday, led by Eric Hanslits with an 82.

Bandon Invitational

Trevor Harding shot a 74 to lead Westside Christian to the team title in the 12-school Bandon Invitational at Bandon Dunes on Monday.

Westside Christian finished with a team total of 319, good for a 28-stroke edge over McKenzie. Gold Beach was third, Reedsport seventh, Bandon eighth, Myrtle Point 10th and Coquille 11th.

Hugo Treinen led Gold Beach with an 82, the best score among South Coast players. Reedsport’s Cody Savey had an 85.

RO Gamez of Oakridge (78) and Casey King of McKenzie (79) finished second and third overall.

GIRLS TENNIS

Bulldogs win

North Bend topped host North Eugene 6-2 in a nonleague tennis match Monday.

The Bulldogs got singles wins by Amanda Keith, Mallory Crocker and Kaja Gresko. In doubles, the North Bend teams of Lisa Wiggins and Keeandra Rodriguez, and Camille Deming and Amanda Fowler, won their matches, while Amanda Lee and Kaitlin Kirkeby won by forfeit.

A second scheduled match against Junction City was rained out.

“Our team played very well,” said North Bend coach Simmie Muth. “We showed great improvement. We’re excited about (playing) Marist on Friday.”
