NB library art show

Carol L. Young’s art is on display in the conference room at the North Bend Public Library, 1800 Sherman Ave., during April.

She is a  botanist, and her love for flowers shows in her art, a press release said. She also paints landscapes, nature scenes, ocean scenes and waterfalls. She also wrote, illustrated and self-published the book “What Grows Here?: Mountain Gardening in Northern California.” Copies are available at the public libraries and at http://whatgrowshere.com.

Wednesday

College night

High School College Night will be held at 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday at the Oregon Coast Culinary Institute on the Southwestern Oregon Community College campus, 1988 Newmark Ave., in Coos Bay.

The event’s purpose is to prepare high school students for college or university studies. The free event is open to all high school students and their parents/guardians.

Keynote speaker will be David McDonald, associate provost of Western Oregon University.

Other speakers will discuss how to choose a college, the value of Honor’s College and how to increase your chances to be admitted to this option. There  will be a workshop on winning scholarships. Also counselors will guide students in what courses to take in high school to be ready for college and inform students of  how to earn college credit in high school.

Poets at library

In honor of April as National Poetry Month, the Coos Bay Public Library will host an evening of poetry at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, in the main part of the library, 525 W. Anderson Ave.

The featured poets will be Tim Applegate, Judith Montgomery and Dan Matthews. Applegate’s book “At the End of Day” was published last year by Erik Muller’s Traprock Press. It explores work and play, the natural world and family, and moments of connection, a press release said. Montgomery’s book is “Red Jess,” and Matthews’ book is “Rain, Heavy at Times” and chronicles his and his wife’s journey through her struggle with cancer.

King’s Heralds Quartet

The King’s Heralds quartet will perform at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15, at the Coos Bay Seventh-day Adventist Church, 2175 Newmark Ave.

The group performs in a variety of musical styles, and some parts of the concert are devoted to children.

The interdenominational quartet was founded in Texas in 1927. It has toured the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America, South Pacific, Australia, Asia and Africa; and won numerous awards. It also was one of the first Christian gospel groups to tour the People’s Republic of China since 1949.  Current members are Don Scroggs, tenor; Joel Borg, lead; Russell Hospedales, baritone; Jeff Pearles, bass.

Young Author’s Tea

The local Driftwood Council of the Oregon Reading Association will host a Young Author’s Tea from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, at the Coos Bay Public Library, 525 Anderson Ave.

All area students, in all schools, both public and private, are invited to submit original writing. Writing can be from any of the following categories: poetry, fiction, non-fiction, persuasive or class books. Students from kindergarten through 12th grade can submit work.

Entries can be sent to Madison Elementary School, Attention Michelle Newsum, P.O. Box 509, Coos Bay, OR 97420. All entries should include the author’s name, school, grade, teacher’s name and e-mail address if not a Coos Bay School District employee. The entry deadline is April 10.

All work will be on display in the Myrtlewood Room at Coos Bay Public Library. An open mike will be available for any students to read from their own work. The Driftwood Council and the Friends of the Coos Bay Public Library will provide coffee, tea, punch and snacks.   

Bonsai in the Garden

A Bonsai in the Garden event will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, at the garden house in Shore Acres State Park near Charleston. For more information, those interested can call 267-7597.

Big Band Bash benefit

United Valley Christian Academy will present its annual Big Band Bash dinner and dance on Saturday, April 19, in the Coquille Community Building.  

The community is invited to join in an evening of live music by the award-winning Lab Band Association show band Evolution. The event will include dinner catered by Four Seasons Catering, and a silent auction and raffle.  

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6.  Tickets are on sale through April 12 at Coquille Supply.  (Tickets can also be purchased at the law office of Matthew Muenchrath, 280 N. Collier St. and at the academy, 1742 N. Fir St., Coquille).  This is a limited-seating event. Tickets are $25 each or $45 per couple, and all proceeds go to the Christian Academy.

ServSafe certification

Coos County Public Health will sponsor a ServSafe Manager Certification Class from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, April 28, at Empire Hall, Lakeview G, on the Southwestern Oregon Community College campus, 1988 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay.

Oregon law requires that each restaurant, while in operation, have a person in charge who is knowledgeable about food-borne disease prevention, hazard analysis and critical control points and the food code requirements. Those who pass the ServSafe manager certification class automatically meets the person-in-charge requirements, a press release said.
