Pirates win
Marshfield improved to 2-0 in league with a 6-2 victory over Ashland on Friday.
The Pirates won all of the doubles matches and two of the singles matches.
Jon Massie convincingly won the No. 1 singles match for Marshfield, but Markus Boesl, normally a doubles player, was edged 7-6 and 7-5 by Ashland’s Nick Cross.
“Markus showed a lot of good, attacking net play, which, down the road, will result in a lot of wins” said Marshfield coach Paula Massie.
Senior Zaq Jones suffered the Pirates’ other loss after coming back in a three-set match only to fall short in the final set.
David Stys persevered through a marathon match to overcome Ashland’s Ed Dickey, winning the third set 6-4.
Playing No. 1 doubles for the first time, Marshfield’s Brandon Benson and Brogan Trull won their match in straight sets.
Rounding out the doubles winners for the Pirates were Jamey Moriarty and David Perrin, Josh Bott and Jeff Stephens, and Brealan Mosieur and Andre Van Rooyen, who all won three-set matches. The final two pairs both rallied after losing the first set of their matches.
“I was very proud of them,” said Massie. “Ashland was a deep team with a lot of good players.”
