A Coos County grand jury indicted a Bandon man Thursday on attempted murder and six other charges stemming from a February shooting at a local bar.

Monte B. Callaway, 47, is accused in the shooting of Paul E. Conner, 37, an employee of Lloyd’s of Bandon, on Feb. 21. Both men suffered gunshot wounds at the Bandon tavern and each sustained head injuries.

According to a Coos County District Attorney’s Office press release, the grand jury returned indictments charging Callaway with attempted murder with a firearm, first-degree assault with a firearm, second-degree assault with a firearm, unlawful use of a firearm, and three separate charges of recklessly endangering another person.

According to a press release the day after the incident, the suspect entered the tavern armed with a shotgun and fired shots at Conner, which struck him in the head. Then, he turned the weapon on himself, shooting himself in the face.

The first four charges pertain to the shooting of Conner and the counts of reckless endangerment pertain to other people present at the bar at the time of the shooting and who were potentially in the line of fire. They were not injured, the press release said.

Attempted murder and first-degree assault are considered class A felonies that come with mandatory minimum sentences of 90 months in prison. Second-degree assault is a class B felony punishable by a mandatory minimum of 70 months in prison. Unlawful use of a weapon, if it is found that a firearm was used during a crime, comes with a mandatory five-year prison sentence; and reckless endangerment can come with a potential maximum sentence of one year in the county jail.

Callaway’s next court date is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 25, when he will appear for an arraignment on the indictment in front of Coos County Circuit Judge Martin Stone.
