Monday
VFW to meet
VFW Post 7488 invites people who have served in the military and were in a combat area such as World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq, Afghanistan or any other conflict, to join the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Post 7488 will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday at Gussie’s, 1088 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay.

Wednesday
Audubon talk
Paul Engelmeyer, manager of Audubon Society’s Ten-Mile Creek Sanctuary, will give a presentation on marine reserves at the next Cape Arago Audubon Society meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9, at the downstairs room of the Milner Crest Education Center, 1255 Hemlock Ave., Coos Bay.
Engelmeyer is the coastal important bird area coordinator for the Audubon Society of Portland and the statewide conservation representative on the Ocean Policy Advisory Council. He also does environmental consulting for organizations such as the Native Fish Society and The Wetlands Conservancy.
The movie “Common Ground” will be shown as well.

Astronomy lecture
Southwestern Oregon Community College will host an astronomy lecture this month by Rice University astrophysicist Dr. Reggie Dufour.
Dufour will discuss “Origins of the Universe and the Structure of the Solar System” at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Eden Hall on the Southwestern campus, 1988 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay. Dufour has logged time on most of the large telescopes in the United States, including the Hubble Space Telescope, a press release said.
The focus of Dufour’s lecture will be on basic astronomy. Dufour is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Rice University and holds a Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Wisconsin. He is a member of the American Astronomical Society and the International Astronomical Union and has served on scientific advisory committees for NASA.

Photography show
The Oregon Coast Photographers’ Association Inc. will hold a photography show and sale during mall hours Thursday through Sunday, at the Pony Village Mall, 1611 Virginia Ave., North Bend. Club members will exhibit approximately 200 images during the show. A special selection of bird photographs will be featured.
The OCPA is a diverse group of photographers on the Southern Oregon coast, ranging from professional to novice, traditional film to digital, wet darkroom to commercial mini-lab users to inkjet desktops. Anyone interested in photography is encouraged to stop by and visit during the show.

GPS class
A global positioning system seminar will be held Saturday, April 12, at the Coos Bay Power Squadron Building in the Charleston Boat Basin. There will be classroom instruction, from 9 a.m. to noon, and afternoon practice and assistance with the GPS. Participants should bring a GPS and instruction manual. The class is limited to 25 people, and the cost is $35.

Earth Day event
A community Earth Day celebration will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, at Ferry Road Park, North Bend.
Entertainment will include live music, African drummers, belly dancers, and demos in Yoga, Aikido and TaKeTiNa. Community partners will share information and offer fun free activities for kids. The only cost is to purchase food or drinks. Some samples of dishes prepared with locally grown food will be available. Visitors can bring a picnic lunch.
Bonsai gardening
A Bonsai in the Garden event will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, at the garden house in Shore Acres State Park near Charleston.
