PORTLAND — Two Portland State basketball players were suspended from the team while the university looks into allegations that they were involved in beating a man while on spring break in Mexico.

Meanwhile, conflicting reports of what happened last weekend in Cabo San Lucas were emerging.

The victim, Kyle Meagher of Michigan, suffered a badly broken jaw when he was hit in the face early Saturday. He returned home early Thursday.

Meagher, 23, maintains he was trying to break up a scuffle when Portland State center Scott Morrison punched him. No witnesses to the event have come forward.

Morrison and guard Jeremiah Dominguez, jailed after the assault, were released late Tuesday and no charges were brought against them. Both players deny they were involved in the beating.

Morrison, who was at home in British Columbia, told CBC TV that he and Dominguez were not involved and they had an alibi.

Dominguez and Morrison, both 22, played on the Vikings team that went a school-record 23-10 and made it to the NCAA tournament for the first time in the team’s history.

The Vikings were a No. 16 seed in the NCAA tournament, losing to top-seeded Kansas in a first-round game.

Portland State earned a trip to the tournament with a 67-51 victory over Northern Arizona in the Big Sky Conference tournament. The Vikings also earned the league’s regular-season title.

Dominguez, the Big Sky’s player of the year, averaged 14.2 points and 4.1 assists per game. Morrison, the league’s defensive player of the year, averaged 10.4 points and 5.8 rebounds.

Portland State said the suspensions were temporary, pending further investigation.

“Given the location and circumstances of the incident, the Athletics Department has found it difficult to get accurate information. There are conflicting reports regarding the level of involvement of Scott Morrison and Jeremiah Dominguez, and we have not seen an official police report,” a statement released by the university said.

“However, there is cause to believe that the two student-athletes have acted outside the reasonable standards of behavior established by our athletics program and are therefore suspended at this time,” it concluded.
