Bandon’s Melinda Torres took medalist honors, while North Bend won the team title in a girls golf match at Bandon Dunes on Wednesday.

The golfers played nine holes in sunny, but windy, conditions at the resort.

Torres shot a 51 to take medalist honors, with Reedsport’s Heather Parker second with a 52.

North Bend shot a team total of 242, which was 10 strokes better than both Reedsport and Gold Beach.

Michelle Schultz led the Bulldogs with a 54.

Danika Stanley had the top score for Gold Beach with a 57.

Nguyen medalist

Marshfield’s Nicole Nguyen shot a 90 to take medalist honors by one stroke over Thurston’s Hailey Partridge in a Midwestern League match at Bandon Crossings on Tuesday.

The Colts won the team title with 404 strokes, while Marshfield was second with 428.

Lancers beat Pirates

Churchill beat visiting Marshfield 5-1 on Wednesday in the Midwestern League softball opener for both schools.

The game was scoreless until the fourth inning where Churchill notched one run. The Lancers added another run in the fifth and three more in the sixth.

Marshfield got its run in the seventh on a home run by Jayla Tavernier.

“The kids competed pretty hard, but we had some costly errors that scored runs on us,” said Marshfield coach Floyd Montiel.

Churchill remained error-free, while Marshfield committed four miscues.

The Pirates will play at home against Springfield on Friday at 5 p.m.

Nonleague

Braves win

Stephanie Clardy hit a first-inning home run to give Reedsport an early spark on the way to a 3-1 softball win over visiting Yoncalla on Thursday.

With two outs in the first, Kelsey Moore hit a triple for the Braves. Clardy followed with her home run.

Reedsport added another run in the second inning when Hannah Smith singled and later scored on a single by Brianna Ekelund.

Smith and Lindsay Holden each had two hits for the Braves, while Ekelund had a big day in the field at second base.

“Brianna made some amazing plays today,” said Reedsport coach Casey Howard.

“It was a good game,” Howard said. “Last time we played them, we lost 7-4. The girls were wanting (to get revenge) today.”

The Braves return to Sunset Conference play with a game at Myrtle Point on Friday.

Coquille wins

Coquille got its first win of the softball season, pounding host Illinois Valley 15-0 in five innings.

Nikki Hall pitched a four-hitter for the Red Devils and Courtney Davis had a double and a triple among her four hits for Coquille.

“We flat out put everything together,” said Randy Miles, one of the Coquille coaches. “We finally hit, played defense and threw strikes. That’s been our nemesis — throwing balls.”

Hall did not issue any walks and had three strikeouts in the game.

“Nikki Hall threw a great game,” Miles said.

Hall and Stephanie Jones each had two hits for Coquille.

“We did very well to get going,” Miles said.

BASEBALL

Braves top Yoncalla

David King pitched a five-hitter with 13 strikeouts to lead Reedsport to a 9-3 nonleague win over visiting Yoncalla on Wednesday.

Ryan Smith had three hits and stole three bases for the Braves. He also drove in a run.

Taylor Palermo had two hits and stole a base for the Braves. Cory Christoffersen had a double for Reedsport.

Kyle Arter drove in two of Yoncalla’s three runs in the fifth inning.
