The following events and activities are scheduled this week and next on the South Coast.
Friday, Saturday
Rogue trail work
Volunteers are needed to help build a new segment of the Rogue River Walk from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday; and to do maintenance on the Oregon Coast Trail from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
The Friday work party will begin at the east side of Huntley Park, seven miles up the south bank of the Rogue River. The Saturday work party will begin at Arch Rock Picnic Area, near mile post 345 on U.S. Highway 101.
Tools will be provided, and participants should wear sturdy shoes and longsleeve clothes. There will be some poison oak. Participants also can bring a sack lunch to eat after the work party.

All weekend
Boat show
A boat show will be held at Pony Village Mall on Saturday and Sunday. There will be a swimsuit, surf and summer wear fashion show from Macy’s, J.C. Penney, Maurice’s and Sunset Sports.
The yacht club will have some sailboats on display along with a video on the sport. Y Marina also will have boats exhibited. North Bend Fire and Rescue will have a rescue boat and information available. The fashion show will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Models will include Miss Coos County contestants.
Also Saturday at the mall, friends, supporters and volunteers with the Court Appointed Special Advocates program of Coos County will sell paper hearts from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The hearts will cost $1 and will be dedicated to children or others at the CASA of Coos County event, “Lights of Hope — Have a Heart for a Child” candlelight ceremony at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, at the Coos Bay Boardwalk.
Egyptian Theatre
The Steven Spielberg classic “ET: The Extra Terrestrial” (1982) will be on screen Friday night at the Egyptian Theatre in downtown Coos Bay. This is a fundraiser for Blossom Gulch Elementary School.
The New York City crime drama “The French Connection” (1971), starring Gene Hackman, will play on Saturday; and
“Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” (1953), starring Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russel, will play on Sunday.
Friday and Saturday shows start at 7 p.m., and Sunday shows start at 3 p.m.
The box office opens one hour before showtimes. General admission is $4, $3.50 for seniors and those 12 and under, and $3 for members. All tickets for benefit shows cost $5.

Saturday
Free Flight garage sale
Free Flight’s garage sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Odd Fellows Hall (formerly Farwest Hall) on Highway 42 South in Bandon. From noon until 1 p.m., everything will sell for $1 per bag or per large item.
Free Flight, located in Bandon, is the only Bird and Marine Mammal Rehabilitation organization on the Southern Oregon Coast. Orphaned and injured animals are rescued and rehabilitated year-round. As a nonprofit organization, donations and memberships are essential to the continuing operation of Free Flight. Many expenses are incurred to efficiently operate the center, run entirely by a non-paid staff of committed volunteers, a press release said.

SMART fundraiser
Rogers Zoo will host “Cool SMART Event” from 5 p.m. to close on Saturday in downtown North Bend for the local Start Making A Reader Today program.
The Dale Inskeep Band, an original acoustic surf-country style band will be playing mellow tunes. Inskeep, the principal at Bunker Hill Elementary School, will play acoustic guitar. The cover charge is $5, with all proceeds going to SMART. Rogers Zoo, 2037 Sherman Ave., also will donate a percentage of sales to SMART.

Monday-Wednesday
Coos Bay play auditions
The On Broadway Thespians will hold auditions for four weekends of theater at Gussie’s at 7 p.m. on Monday through Wednesday at Gussie’s Bar and Grill, 1088 Newmark Ave., Empire.
Organizers are looking for people of all ages, with or without theater experience. The performances will be held late April through late May and include a weekend of improvisation, two weekends of one-act plays a weekend of storybook theater. Each auditioner will be asked to show improvisational skills and do selected readings to show stage voice.

Poetry reading
In honor of April as National Poetry Month, the Coos Bay Public Library will host an evening of poetry at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, in the main part of the library, 525 W. Anderson Ave.
The featured poets will be Tim Applegate, Judith Montgomery and Dan Matthews. Applegate’s book “At the End of Day” was published last year by Erik Muller’s Traprock Press. It explores work and play, the natural world and family, and moments of connection, a press release said. Montgomery’s book is “Red Jess,” and Matthew’s book is “Rain, Heavy at Times” and chronicles his and his wife’s journey through her struggle with cancer.
The free program is sponsored by the Friends of the Coos Bay Public Library. For information, those interested can call 269-1101.
Gold Coast Chorus
The Gold Coast Chorus will host two shows of the 55th-annual Barbershop Harmony Extravaganza on Saturday, April 12 — at 2 p.m. and again at 7:30 p.m., at Little Theatre on the Bay, 2100 Sherman Ave., North Bend.
The Gold Coast Chorus will lead off the show with four-part harmony favorites, new and old. The chorus features “South Coast Harmony,” Chris Beebe, Ken Graber, John Harding and Tom Jacobson; and “Class Distinction,” Bob Taylor, Keith Stewart, Dave Oldfield and Tom Young
The featured quartet will be 3 Outa Four. The quartet includes tenor Duane Christensen and his sons Eric, lead singer, and Ian, baritone. Lowell Smith will sing bass.
Also performing will be “New Horizons” from Marshfield High School, directed by Graber.
Tickets cost $10 for the matinee and $12 for the evening show. They are available at Bandon TrueValue Hardware, Farr’s TrueValue in Coquille, Cone 9 in the Pony Village Mall and Butler’s Pronto Print in Coos Bay, as well at the door.
