Reedsport got its first Sunset Conference baseball win by beating host Bandon 5-4 on Tuesday.

The Braves got a complete game by Taylor Palermo and a big hit by David King to improve to 1-2 in league play.

Palermo allowed seven hits, but struck out six batters and walked just two.

“He kept us off balance,” said Bandon coach Gary Chrismon, adding that Palermo forced six ground outs in the game.

King, meanwhile, helped the Braves score three runs in the third inning.

After Palermo singled and Cory Christoffersen walked, King lined the ball into centerfield and it took a bad hop, rolling all the way to the fence for a two-run triple. King then scored on a wild pitch.

That stretch spoiled a strong outing by Bandon freshman Michael Bennett, who struck out 12 hitters and walked just three, while allowing only four hits in the game.

Jimmy Mack had three hits and scored one of Bandon’s runs. Keith Murray had a triple in the seventh, when the Tigers scored twice. The rally ended when Palermo induced a pop-up with runners on first and third and two outs.

Panthers win in seventh

Garrett Hoffman drove in the winning run with a single to left field in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Gold Beach a 6-5 win over visiting Cascade Christian on Tuesday.

The Panthers rallied from an early 5-0 deficit for the win.

In the seventh, Mitch McDonald and Travis Moore both were hit by pitches with one out. Timmy Smith moved them up a base with a sacrifice bunt and Hoffman singled to left.

McDonald was 2-for-3 in the game with two RBIs and two runs for the Panthers, while Ricco Lang had a strong outing on the mound, getting better as the game went on.

Lang threw 71 pitches in the first three innings and just 46 in the last four.

“He just kept getting stronger,” Gold Beach coach Greg Brown said. “He just hung in there. He pitched a great game.”

Lang walked one batter and struck out four.

Gold Beach, meanwhile, struck out just three times during the contest.

“We’re hitting the ball,” Brown said.

The Panthers improved to 2-1 in league play, which puts them alone in second place.

The team benefited from four games last week at the Les Schwab Invitational in John Day.

Though Gold Beach only won one game, falling 9-6 to Clatskanie on Saturday, the Panthers gained experience and improved throughout the week, Brown said.

Wildcats beat Bobcats

Glide’s Kyle Fields pitched a five-hitter to lead the Wildcats to a 6-2 win over host Myrtle Point in a game between the last two unbeaten teams in the conference.

Fields also had a double for the Wildcats, who improved to 2-0. Brock Halter had two hits and two runs for Glide.

Myrtle Point got both its runs in the sixth inning. Zack Sykes singled and Jake Stevens brought him in with a double. Stevens scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by Armando Rangel.

Sykes and Stevens each had two hits in the game for the Bobcats. Stevens also had a strong outing on the mound, allowing nine hits.

“He kept us in a position where we were in the game,” said Myrtle Point coach John Zumwalt.

“We had a few mental mistakes that we made early that kind of cost us. But for such a young team, we really battled back. The team competed the whole way through. That was good to see.”

Nonleague

Bulldogs fall

Newport scored the winning run in the sixth inning to spoil a comeback bid by visiting North Bend, beating the Bulldogs 5-4 on Tuesday.

North Bend had rallied to tie the score with four runs in the top of the sixth. Cody Walton was hit by a pitch to open the inning and scored on a double by Ethan Ottemiller. After Kale Forrester was hit by a pitch and Bryce Weidman singled, Sean Jany had an infield single to score Ottemiller. Bruce Ohlrich followed with an RBI fielder’s choice and Alex Clark singled to score the tying run.

But in the bottom half, Travis Iverson walked and eventually moved to third base. He scored when North Bend had another runner picked off first base, but that runner got into a rundown and Iverson slipped home safely.

“It’s not something we’ve spent a bunch of time practicing yet,” said North Bend coach Brad Horning.

Weidman had a strong outing on the mound, allowing just four hits and walking two while striking out nine batters over the first five innings.

The Bulldogs were playing just their fourth game of the season after two doubleheaders last week were rained out. North Bend will play Cottage Grove in a doubleheader on Saturday before league play starts next week.

SOFTBALL

Sunset Conference

Panthers win

Gold Beach shut out visiting Cascade Christian 11-0 on Tuesday to improve to 3-0 in Sunset Conference play.

Molly Hockema pitched a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts and no walks in the five-inning game and also started the scoring with a bases-loaded triple in the third inning.

The Panthers scored five in the third and six more in the fourth.

Hockema finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Katie Walling and Miranda Hunnicutt each had two hits and scored two runs.

“We’re getting better,” said Gold Beach coach Jerry Ross. “We’re hitting the ball a little better.”

The Panthers improved to 6-1 on the year.

Braves beat Tigers

Reedsport scored six runs in the third inning to build a big lead on the way to an 11-4 win over host Bandon on Tuesday.

Stephanie Clardy, Lindsay Holden and Hannah Smith had two hits each for the Braves. Smith and Chelsea Hitchcock scored twice each and Brianna Ekelund had three runs.

Ashley O’Grady had a double and scored twice for Bandon. Becky Butler had 10 strikeouts.

Wildcats top Bobcats

Glide crushed host Myrtle Point 18-6 on Tuesday.

The Wildcats made their largest blow in the third inning when they scored nine runs. They added five more in the fourth to take a 16-0 lead before the Bobcats scored three runs in each of the final two innings.

“We started hitting too late in the game,” said Myrtle Point coach John Marquez. “We battled back which is always good to see.”

Each team had six hits, but the major difference was in the errors, with the Wildcats holding the count to three while Myrtle Point made 11 miscues.

“We had a lot of bases on balls and a lot of passed balls on the catcher which led to most of our errors,” said Marquez.

Kylee Fischer pitched the entire five innings for the Bobcats, throwing five strikeouts while walking nine batters. Fischer was also 1-for-3 at the plate.

Myrtle Point will play at home again this Friday against Reedsport at 4:30 p.m., but won’t see Glide again until late April.

“They are a solid, all-around disciplined team,” said Marquez. “We will be more prepared next time we play them, it will be a better game.”

Nonleague

Cubs top Pirates

Newport took advantage of five Marshfield errors and beat the host Pirates 5-1 in a nonleague game Tuesday.

The Cubs also had 11 hits and scored in four of the seven innings, but the errors were the big difference, said Marshfield coach Floyd Montiel.

“We made some miscues with runners on and, offensively, we left six people on base in scoring position,” Montiel said. “And I think we were a little flat. We just did not have any emotion today.”

Stacy Smith had two hits, including a double, for the Pirates. Tiffany Wiley also had two hits and scored Marshfield’s only run on a single by Jessica Ott in the seventh inning.

The Pirates open Midwestern League play today at Churchill.

Newport beats Bulldogs

Newport shut out host North Bend 13-0 on Tuesday to complete a sweep of the Bay Area schools.

“It was a rough game,” said North Bend coach David Johnson.

The Cubs were able to get six hits while remaining error-free on defense. The Bulldogs had two hits and eight errors.

Newport pitcher Megan Hogan had to be moved to catcher as Megan Deblois was injured in the fourth inning. Replacing Hogan on the mound was Carissa Lager. Hogan had four strikeouts.

Emalee Lincoln had five strikeouts for North Bend.

The Bulldogs have a doubleheader this Friday at 3 p.m. against Gold Beach.

Bruins edge Chieftains

Brookings-Harbor’s Jesse Goergen had the game-winning hit in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead the Bruins to a 4-3 win over Rogue River.

The Bruins scored three times in the first, but then went scoreless until the eighth, when Goergen had her big hit.

Goergen also had a successful day on the mound, as she racked up 14 strikeouts.

BOYS TENNIS

Pirates win

Visiting Marshfield pounded Thurston 7-1 on Tuesday in its first league match of the season.

Marshfield swept the singles matches in straight sets. Jon Massie, Brogan Trull and David Stys combined to lose just seven games, while Brandon Benson won a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 against Thurston’s left-handed Jon Nixon at No. 2 singles in windy conditions.

In the doubles matches, Jamey Moriarty and Jeff Stephens won a first-set tiebreaker against Thurston’s Kevin Keebler and Jake Larson by a 7-3 margin and went on to beat the Colts 6-4 in the second set.

Marshfield also got wins from the teams of Brealan Mosieur and Zaq Jones, and Josh Bott and Andre Van Rooyen.

Markus Boesl and David Perrin suffered the only loss for the Pirates, playing Thurston’s very tough No. 1 doubles team of Matt Raleigh and Jesse Diamond.

GIRLS TENNIS

Pirates split

Marshfield’s girls won all four doubles matches to split their Midwestern League opener with visiting Thurston 4-4 on Tuesday.

“I’m very excited,” said Marshfield coach Angie Kemp. “I’m happy with how everybody played.”

Leslie Silver and Nicole Zyta topped Tara Hill and Madie Whitsel 6-2, 6-3 for  the Pirates. Chloe Danielson and Nikki Gross also combined for a straight-sets win, taking the second set in a tiebreaker, while Katelyn Richmond and Amber Owen beat their foes by a 6-0, 6-2 margin. At No. 4 doubles, sisters Mallory and Alex Crane battled back after losing the first set to take a three-set victory.

“The doubles are just doing remarkable,” Kemp said.

Thurston swept the singles, though Kemp noted that only Marshfield’s No. 1 singles player, sophomore Brittany Morris, has any experience.

“And she only started playing last year,” Kemp said.

She added, though, that now that they have the basics down, the singles players need to start working on their strategy.

“It’s time to really hunker down,” she said.
