North Bay Elementary and Lighthouse School went into lockdown Tuesday afternoon, after a staff member noticed a boy carrying what appeared to be a semi-automatic rifle.

According to the Coos County Sheriff’s Office press log, at approximately 2:22 p.m., deputies received a call from a North Bay staff member, stating that a 12-year-old boy, dressed all in black and carrying the gun, was seen near a church on Wildwood Road. It goes on to say that a principal of one of the schools contacted the boy, found he was carrying an air gun with plastic BBs and advised him to go home.

North Bend Superintendent BJ Hollensteiner said the boy was spotted just as school staff were releasing children to go home for the day. She said the children were on their way to the buses at the time, so they were taken onto the buses, where they remained until it was determined they were safe.

Sgt. Pat Downing, spokesman for the Coos County Sheriff’s Office, said there will be no further investigation into the incident as no crime was committed.

Lighthouse Principal Bruce Steele said the children were released from the lockdown after school administrators received word from law enforcement that all was clear.

North Bay Principal Colleen Reeves was unavailable for comment at press time.

angrywhiteman...while there wasn't a crime there are other issues with the kid that need to be addressed by professionals. mad parent's right it shouldn't be let go.

MAD PARENT, There was no crime, there was nothing "let Go". What would you propose be done? I'm just curious why you think "something should be done" about a perfectly legal act? On the other hand FUMING NBAY PARENT appears to have a valid concern, and will get about the same satisfaction from the school as you MP

Sad that a kid with a BB gun can raise such a ruckus.
