Wednesday CB garden clubCoos Bay Garden Club member Shirley Woods will be sharing her secrets of growing dahlias at the next Coos Bay Garden Club meeting, scheduled for 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1290 Thompson Road, Coos Bay.
Dahlias, one of the most spectacular flowers that can be grown in this coastal climate, come in many colors, styles, heights and sizes, a press release said.

Orchid societyThe monthly meeting of the Pacific Orchid Society will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the North Bend Housing Authority conference room at 1700 Monroe Ave., North Bend.
The meeting will feature a demonstration of ideas for creating corsages and floral arrangements from orchid flowers and other plants by Pauline and Nelda Schmidt. There also will be the usual display of blooming orchids brought in by members.
Coffee and dessert will be served. Anyone interested in orchids is invited to attend. Society members experienced in various phases of orchid horticulture are available to answer questions.
The Pacific Orchid Society normally meets the first Wednesday of each month at the Housing Authority conference room. Presentations relating to orchids are a monthly staple of meetings. For more information, those interested can call 269-5405.
Boys & Girls ClubAs part of National Boys & Girls Club Week, the Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon will be hosting a family night open house from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday. The event will include club tours, craft projects, game room activities and On-the-Spot Fun games for parents, family and friends. The event is free to anyone who wishes to attend and all Club members and children must be accompanied by an adult.

Friday Grandparents ROCKGrandparents ROCK (Raising Our Children’s Kids) will hold a monthly support group meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Friday at the Faith Lutheran Church, 2741 Sherman Ave., North Bend.
A collective birthday party for the young people will be held, including a White Elephant Gift Exchange and cake.
This program is sponsored by The Area Agency on Aging, a Service of South Coast Business Employment Corporation, and is open to all grandparents or other relatives raising children.
Pizza will be available; participants share in the cost.

Saturday Trivia nightTrivia Night will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday in the small auditorium of the Coquille Community Center, 115 N. Birch St.

State rep to speakState Rep. Arnie Roblan, D-Coos Bay, will have coffee with constituents in Florence from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Siuslaw River Roasters, 1240 Bay St. Everyone is encouraged to come and discuss state issues of concern.
Next week Gem societyThe Lower Umpqua Gem and Lapidary Society will meet at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, at the Winchester Bay Community Center, 635 Broadway.
The meeting will feature a lecture on diamonds. A raffle for mineral specimens will be held, and refreshments will be served.
The club is open to anyone interested in the study of minerals, the rocks they occur in, gems or all phases of the lapidary arts. Activities members are involved in include beading, silversmithing, and the art of wire-wrapping.

NB garden clubThe advantages of hydroponics will be the discussion topic for the North Bend Garden Club’s April meeting.
The group will gather at noon on Wednesday, April 9, at the North Bend Housing Authority, 1700 Monroe Ave. The guest speaker will be Tony Henderson, owner of Gorilla Garden Supply. The luncheon is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, at the Black Market Gourmet, 495 Central Ave., Coos Bay. The cost is $18 per person. Reservations are due by April 4.

‘Let’s Do Lunch’Coos Bay/North Bend Connection will host “Let’s Do Lunch” from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, at the Red Lion Hotel, 1313 N. Bayshore Drive, Coos Bay.
Luncheon and program will cost $12, inclusive. Guest speaker will be Nancy Reed from Union.

Ongoing Reading program for kidsThe Coos Bay Public Library’s Independent Reading Program, Around the Library in 80 Days, continues through May 22. This program is for students in preschool to the 12th grade.
Students keep track of their reading and/or listening over 80 days on a special form available from school libraries and the Coos Bay Public Library. Everyone will win a small prize after reading 400, 800, 1,200 and 1,600 pages or minutes. Everyone who finishes 1,600 receives a paperback book and a chance to win one of the larger prizes donated by Bay Area businesses and organizations.
NBHS fundraiserThe North Bend High School 2008 Senior Parent Committee is selling 10-inch multi-colored hanging baskets as a fundraiser for the “safe and sober” all night party that will follow the graduation on May 30.
Orders will be here on May 2, in time for Mother’s Day.

Compassionate FriendsThe Compassionate Friends will resume monthly meetings for parents, grandparents and siblings of families who have lost a child. The meetings will be held the first Monday of the month at 6 p.m. at South Coast Hospice, 1620 Thompson Road in Coos Bay.

Family planning servicesWaterfall Community Health Center provides free or low-cost family planning services to women and men who do not have health insurance.
The program is offered through the Family Planning Project. Most teens also qualify and the clinic can provide confidential care and offer a wide range of birth control methods.
Also, Waterfall can offer free screenings to women who meet the qualifications.
People interested in finding out whether they qualify can call 751-7842. The clinic is located at 1890 Waite St. in North Bend.
