Community Sports, Fast Breaks for March 29: Mohr, Matson again swim to Postal Championships titles
By Staff Reports
Saturday, March 29, 2008 12:10 PM PDT
Bay Area Master swimmers, Karen Matson and Ralph Mohr, became national champions yet again in the One Hour Postal Championships held at Mingus Park Pool.
Matson swam a distance of 4,610 yards (two and one-half miles) in 60 minutes, helping the Oregon relay team to a first-place finish in the women’s 35-44 age group. In the women’s 40-44 age group, Matson ranked thirteenth individually.
Coming a quarter-mile short of Matson was Mohr who swam 3,950 yards to aide the men’s 65-and-over relay team to a national title and nabbing a seventh-place finish in the men’s 65-69 age group individually. The relay team also shattered the previous national record by over 800 yards.
The competition has the contestants go for one hour straight in an effort to swim the greatest distance. Swimmers compete in separate pools and scores are sent in to be compared to other participants throughout the United States. The top three swimmers in each state form a relay team that competes on the national level.
The next meet on the local masters’ schedule is the state championships at the Tualatin Hills Pool in Beaverton on April 4-6.
Salmon Creek Run
The South Coast Running Club’s 18th annual Salmon Creek Run will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 5, at the Powers Hotel in Powers.
The event includes a 10-kilometer run and a 5-kilometer run/walk. The entry fee is $4 for adults and $2 for students under 19.
Winners of both races will receive smoked salmon, as will other entrants selected at random. Ribbons will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age division.
For more information, call race director Joe Hallett at 439-4485.
Roseburg to Coos Bay Relay
The 31st edition of the Roseburg to Coos Bay Relay will be held on April 19. Five-person teams will cover the 67-mile course, with each team member running three legs varying from approximately 3 to 6 miles.
The relay route follows the historic Coos Bay Military Wagon Road, which travels mostly through sparsely populated remote areas of the Oregon Coast Range. The beautiful scenery and peaceful solitude of the little-used road provide a stimulating background for the race, a press release said.
There also will be a 23-mile walk relay, which starts at LaVerne Park on the North Fork of the Coquille River. It follows the scenic North Fork for about 5 miles and joins the run course at Fairview.
The South Coast Running Club and the Camp Millennium Committee sponsor this event. It is a benefit for Camp Millennium, which provides recreational opportunities for children living with cancer.
