The sun was shining on the first prep golf tournament at Bandon Crossings, the new course south of Bandon.
“Wow, did we ever catch a break in the weather,” said Bandon coach Gary Gant, whose team hosted the 12-team invitational on Thursday. “The weather cooperated and we had a great day.”
Brookings-Harbor won the tournament, while McKenzie’s Casey King shot a 1-under par 71 to take medalist honors.
Brookings-Harbor shot a team total of 325, led by Chad Patton’s 79, to beat runner-up Gold Beach by 37 strokes. David Wiggins, Wolfgang Jacquez and Cooper Howard all shot 82 for the Bruins.
Mitch Longwill led the Panthers with an 87.
McKenzie and Cascade Christian took third and fourth, respectively.
Reedsport was eighth, Bandon ninth and Myrtle Point 11th.
Cody Savey shot an 89 to lead Reedsport, while Blake Larkin had a 96 for Bandon.
In addition to taking medalist honors, King also won one of two closest to the pin awards, with the other going to Cascade Christian’s Nick Daley.

Panthers lose in snow
Gold Beach dropped a 9-3 game to Class 5A Willamette in a game played during a constant snowstorm at the Les Schwab Invitational baseball tournament at John Day on Friday.
“It snowed the whole game,” said Gold Beach coach Greg Brown, adding that his team played well.
“We’re starting to hit the ball, but we’re still making some errors,” he said. “We’re getting better.”
The Panthers had eight errors during the game, but kept the score close until the sixth inning, the final one the teams played.
Willamette led 5-2 before the final inning, though Gold Beach led 2-1 after the first inning.
“We were right in the game,” Brown said.
Mitch McDonald and Timmy Smith both had two singles. Smith drove in two runs and McDonald had one RBI.
Mackenzie Burdett pitched a six-hitter for the Panthers.
Rain washes away schedule
Games involving other South Coast teams were postponed Friday, though Marshfield’s baseball team will try to get in its doubleheader with visiting Siuslaw today. |
