Teen presents lectureMiss Coos County Outstanding Teen Contestant Ashlee Garton-Rutland will present a lecture on the prevention of cruelty to animals at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1, in the large meeting room at the North Bend Public Library, 1800 Sherman Ave. Garton-Rutland will present facts about the prevalence of animal cruelty in the community and on the national level.
Christmas in JulyMeetings for Reedsport’s Christmas in July Committee are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on April 1 and 15, at the Reedsport Church of God, 2191 Birch Ave. in Reedsport.
The group’s mission is to preserve and revitalize houses in the community, assuring that low-income homeowners, from the elderly and disabled to families with children, live in warmth, safety and independence, a press release said. The workday is set for July 12.
Organizers are looking for referrals from homeowners who need work done to their homes and who may qualify for those repairs to be done by Christmas in July volunteers. Volunteers also are needed. Relay teams organizeThe North Bend/Coos Bay Relay For Life will hold team captain meetings at 6 p.m. at the South Umpqua room at the Red Lion Hotel, 1313 N. Bayshore, Coos Bay, on the following Thursdays: April 3, May 1 and June 5.

Paper hearts for saleFriends, supporters and volunteers with the Court Appointed Special Advocates program of Coos County will sell paper hearts from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, at the Pony Village Mall, 1611 Virginia Ave., North Bend.
The hearts will cost $1 and will be dedicated to children or others at the CASA of Coos County event, “Lights of Hope — Have a Heart for a Child” candlelight ceremony at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, at the Coos Bay Boardwalk. April is Child Abuse Awareness Month.

Chorus performs in P.O.The Gold Coast Barbershop Chorus will be the performers for the first Mildred Hill concert of the 2008 season. Goin’ Home’ at Unity A transition workshop, “Goin’ Home,” will be held from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, at Unity by the Bay, 2100 Union St., North Bend. It will be facilitated by Karen L. Lowe.
The workshop will discuss what happens to people, spiritually, at the moment of transition from this life to the next; explore the mysteries of this experience; help plan the way for those who remain behind; how influences of western culture have made a natural process more difficult; the transition experience, based on a variety of sources, including near-death reports; writing one’s own obituary and the way one would like it to unfold in the future; and one’s remembrance or celebration service, including essential information family, friends and spiritual leader will need, a press release said. Advanced registration is requested and the suggested donation is $10.

RHS sports auction setThe seventh-annual Reedsport High School Sports Auction will be from 5 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, at the Reedsport Community Building. The auction is sponsored by Braves Boosters.
A no-host bar and fine dining will be provided by Bedrock’s. Auction items will include vacations and excursions as well as artwork by local artisans. Proceeds will go to junior and senior high school athletics. The cost is $25 per person, which includes bid card. Artist reception setAn artist’s reception from 1 to 3 p.m., on Sunday, April 6, at Evergreen Court, 451 O’Connell, in North Bend, will feature Carol Turner’s oil painting exhibit “Our Beautiful Northwest.” Refresh-ments will be served, and pianist Franklin Turner will provide music.
The exhibit is on display from March 17 to May 15.
She also is the artist of the month for April for the Bay Area Artists Association and her art is on display in the foyer of the Coos Art Museum, 235 Anderson Ave., Coos Bay. Turner will be at the museum during Artwalk, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 10.
After studying art at Contra Costa College in San Pablo, Calif., Turner embarked on a 40-year career in professional graphic arts in California and Oregon. She also is a vocalist and works regularly with her husband, Franklin.
Since retiring from graphics and 18 years as a volunteer with the local jazz festival, she has concentrated on her oil painting. Much of her scenery comes from the North Coquille River area.

Women plan time outWednesday Women’s Time Out will meet at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9, at a new location, the VFW Building, 55382 Bates Road, Bandon.
The “Hello Dolly” section of the event will feature restoration detailer Annie Williams. Participants can bring a doll for a mini-appraisal.
Musical guest will be Ruby Wagner.
The speaker is Nancy Reed of Union. She was raised on a remote ranch in Wyoming and will share how she found answers to life’s questions.
Cost of luncheon and event is $10, inclusive. Children in childcare should bring a sack lunch.
Reservations must be honored or canceled 24 hours prior, or there will be a charge.
The program is sponsored by Stonecroft Ministries and Bandon/Port Orford Christian Women’s Club.
