Time to clean up. This Saturday is SOLV’s Great Oregon Spring Beach Cleanup. The event, which takes place every year in the spring and fall and is now in its 24th year, will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
On Saturday, local particpants can sign up for the cleanup at Umpqua Dunes and Horsfall and Bastendorff beaches. Participants should bring gloves, wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather. Collection bags will be provided at registration booths.
Cleanup zone 11 captain Robin Sears said volunteers should practice safety on the beach by staying away from logs, using caution near rocks and cliffs and always keeping an eye on the ocean.
Participants also should try to avoid nesting sites of the threatened snowy plover while out on the beaches Saturday, Sears said. Volunteers are encouraged to stay out of marked nesting areas and keep dogs on leashes.
Those who sign up at the Horsfall Beach registation booth wil be entered into a drawing for prizes, including gift cerificates to local businesses, all-terrain vehicle riding gear and a free night at The Mill Casino-Hotel.
