Flights to San Francisco from North Bend were made official on Wednesday afternoon, with a starting date for the first flight on July 7.

Tickets will go on sale beginning today.

Coos County Airport District Board Commissioners Clair Jones and Helen Brunell Mineau made the announcement during a press conference at the Southwest Oregon Regional Airport terminal.

“We want to make this official — nonstop Sky West United Express service to San Francisco,” said a breathless Jones. “So buy your tickets now!”

Two flights will leave North Bend, and two will depart from San Francisco daily. The earliest flight will depart Southwest Oregon Regional at 7:25 a.m. and arrive in San Francisco at 9:20 a.m. A second flight will depart from North Bend at 5:40 p.m., arriving in San Francisco at 7:35 p.m.

The early flight from San Francisco will depart at 11:05 a.m. and arrive in North Bend at 12:49 p.m. The evening flight will depart San Francisco at 8:15 p.m. and arrive in North Bend at 9:59 p.m.

The additional flights will coincide with the opening of a new $17 million terminal, also slated for July.

San Francisco flights in North Bend were announced at the same time that Klamath Falls International Airport’s four daily flights to and from San Francisco were made official.

“Sky West United Express is pleased to offer what travelers want — new, convenient, nonstop service to more places in the U.S.,” said Mike Thompson, Sky West’s vice president, market development, in a press release. “This summer, United Express Klamath and North Bend passengers can enjoy access to the City by the Bay — and beyond.”

Jones, who has been on the Airport District Board since its inception in 2002, and on the North Bend City Council for 11 years prior to that, said he has waited more than 25 years for the airport to offer southbound service. In the early 1980s, prior to deregulation, United Airlines provided service to the Bay Area in California, he said, but then the company pulled out of the smaller regions and moved to larger cities.

“They went to a hub system,” Jones said, adding, “It’s getting back to regional now, with these express lines.”

Jones thanked the private, public and corporate sectors for supporting the idea — both financially and verbally — and told Coos County residents, “Use it with enthusiasm.”

Estimates have shown there will be a 70- to 80-percent initial occupancy, according to LeTellier.

He said studies have indicated a 50-percent leakage of passengers choosing to fly from other cities such as Portland, Medford, Eugene and Salem, where the airports offer flights into California.

“One hundred ten thousand tickets are sold a year in this market area, but only 50,000 from here,” LeTellier said. “We’re certainly pleased, but in the next year we have to show we have moved passengers from that leakage column.”

Horizon Air, which offers daily flights to Portland from Southwest Oregon Regional, shouldn’t be affected by the San Francisco flights, according to Jones.

“I think there’s enough leakage out of this area, and enough passengers to go around,” Jones said. “We’ve got a southbound carrier coming, and now we’ve got to make it work for the next 12 months.”

The San Francisco connection gives passengers access to more than 70 destinations, Sky West’s press release said.

Hank Hickox, general manager of Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, which depends on the airport to bring in golfers and vacationers from across the country, said he was thrilled with Sky West’s decision.

“This is a project that’s been under way for about three years,” Hickox said. “It supports travel to the area in tandem with the people who come to the area to go to Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.”

Sky West is currently offering flights on Embraer twin-engine turbo airplanes that will seat 30 passengers, but Hickox said he hopes for larger aircraft in the future.

Hickox said Bandon Dunes already spent $50,000 on a transportation study, and gave $37,500 to the South Coast Development Council, which is administering $75,000 that came from local businesses for marketing the airline.

In regards to the additional $250,000 the airport district has pledged to Sky West, Hickox said, “We will step up to the plate.”

“It’s a wonderful opportunity connecting to Southern California and the rest of the country,” he said. “So we’re not recycling our own dollars. It’s new business.”

Tickets on Sky West’s flights to San Francisco can be purchased starting today, online at www.united.com or by calling (800) 241-6522.
Flights nearly lost to Klamath Falls

The southbound flights almost didn’t happen. On Friday, Southwest Oregon Regional Airport Executive Director Gary LeTellier was told by Sky West’s President Russell “Chip” Childs the airline was going with Klamath Falls, but not North Bend. The reason was rising fuel prices, and North Bend was just farther away from San Francisco, LeTellier said.

Commissioners voted unanimously at an emergency meeting on Tuesday to increase a current pledge by $250,000, to $650,000 to use as a guarantee that the airline would break even on their investment in the first year.

“We dangled the carrot out there,” said Coos County Airport District Com-missioner Helen Brunell Mineau, “but they asked for more of a guarantee.”

On Tuesday, commissioners said they would raise funds for the pledge through donations from local businesses. During Wednesday’s announcement, Brunell Mineau said they also will rely on business park revenues, income from parking fees at the new terminal and money that may be leftover after the terminal expenses.

“None of it is tax dollars,” she said. “We get $800,000 a year in tax revenues, and it won’t be spent (on this).”

Brunell Mineau clarified that they still could get funding from businesses, but commissioners voted to go forth, even without this assurance.

It's my understanding that the new terminal will be for commercial passengers and that the current terminal will be remodeled to handle the Bandon folks.

As for a direct to Seattle, while it would be nice, at the same time, flights to Seattle leave Portland every half hour, and you only have to go to the other side of that little cafe.

Does anyone know why the "straigt through flight from here to Seattle" that they tried one Summer, quit before it hardly got started? I think that failed do to lack of advertisement about it. By the time I knew about it and wanted to take that flight, it had quit. But I never heard why it quit, it just did, without any notice.

I'm still wondering why we built a $17 million dollar (I think that was the figure) terminal when we have had one airline (Horizon) flying in and out of here, and now we get one more, that we are paying a lot of money to, to fly  South.  Two airlines do not necessitate a $17 million dollar terminal  We must be trying to impress the "golfers" coming in to Bandon Dunes.   I am not against Bandon Dunes at all, but my Gosh, we just keep spending more and more money for the rich golfers coming in here, where is it going to stop.  Let Bandon Dunes pay their own way, and contribute to all this stuff we are putting in for them. They don't have to pay taxes on their property from what I understand, and why, they are not some poor small company just starting out without many funds.  It is a rich man building his dream, and has the money to do it, and can certainly pay for all the things we are doing to impress his "golfers" coming here to spend money at his golf course, NOT in the towns that are spending the money.

Elaine: if you're a "former resident" why would this be scary to you....you don't event live here anymore and are you making some sort of biased comment about people who live in SF???? what is that about?

Observer wrote on Mar 28, 2008 10:23 AM:

The sadest part of all of this is that if it is not successful (which I hope it is), other businesses and/or options that would or could come to our area will just look at this failure as just another negative reason to by-pass Coos Bay/North Bend as a risky choice when making their decisions to locate here. We have seen this happen way to many times in our area to be naive anymore.

Why does everything Coos county courts to come here require payola?

LadySadie wrote on Mar 28, 2008 1:04 AM:

To leave in early August and come back mid August will cost $371 round trip per person. It is a little steep, but still I am soooooooooooooooo excited!!!! YAY!

Slippery Slope Continued wrote on Mar 27, 2008 6:44 PM:

If this extortion payment fails to achieve the intended purpose - every single Board member who voted to support this idea should do the right thing and immediately resign their position. Mr. LeTellier should be given his "golden parachute" for being a part of this "really bad idea." This was an extremely ill conceived "solution" to a situation that needed more deliberate thought than it was obviously given before reacting in such a reckless manner. This is most likely going to be another shining example of how the "end never justifies the means" - unfortunately the taxpayers of the District and the users of the airport facility are going to suffer for this decision.

Anybody want to sign a recall petition?

Slippery Slope Continued wrote on Mar 27, 2008 6:43 PM:

Moreover, the new flights come right at the time when our national and local economy is obviously not doing very well. It's very likely that there will be less travelling going on in the very near future due to the belt tightening that everyone is having to do. I guess this payment is intended to carry Skywest through any recessionary period so they don't give up on us and pass us by.

I would have to ask the Board and Mr. LeTellier - What happened to the free-market economy? Why are we subsidizing the operation of an airline with tax dollars? Is the Airport District now going to start subsidizing other business owners who don't break even in their businesses? How about the taxi cab drivers who service the airport - are we now going to subsidize their rising fuel costs, so they will come to the airport and give passengers a ride?

On the slippery slope... wrote on Mar 27, 2008 6:42 PM:

It's hard to be against something that might be an economic benefit to the area - the operative word however is "might." Let's call this what it is - the CEO of Skywest is extorting additional money from the Airport District. To make things worse - our elected Airport Board - whom we have chosen to make informed - and sometimes tough decisions - are willfully taking a course of action that "saves face" by fufilling their pledge to the district voters to achieve the goal of getting flights to San Francisco.

This payment is going to set a terrible precedent for the future of our Airport District that is going to be difficult to justify - especially if this experimet doesn't work. How does Mr. LeTellier and the Board propose to explain to Horizon why they don't get a similar financial "stipend" when Horizon makes a claim that they are losing money on their flights? What if Horizon threatens to pull out - will the Board members vote to give district dollars to keep them flying into SOAR as well?

just checked the skywest web site.
Round trip tickets start at $427.00
Seems a little steep for a commuter flight.

As I said before, let Bandon Dunes make the biggest pledge for the Airline going South.
AND I STILL WANT A STRAIGHT FLIGHT TO SEATTLE.
I would think more people would appreciate going to Seattle, and also get flights out of there to anywhere in the World.
I have family there and so do a lot of people I know, have family in Washington.

This is great news Coos County! I live in the SF Bay Area and still have family in Coos Bay..my family and I have been waiting for this service. Flying up through Portland takes way too much time and you are at the mercy of connections. I also know alot of people in the SF area that would love to travel to CB/NB area to golf and recreate...but were not going to drive the 9 hours or fly through Portland. This will also allow better business connections. I have flown this service from SFO to Redmond...it is a small plane, but worth the time savings. Congratulations...now let's take advantage of it!

This is great! I fly to New Mexico regularly and this will allow me to save a lot of time. I hope everyone uses these services instead of driving to Eugene. Support our area and our airport people!
