Crews from West Coast Contractors assembled a Manitowoc 888 crane that will be used for the New Carissa removal earlier this week. Titan Engineering Director Phil Reed said the crane has a capacity of 230 tons and will have a 180-foot boom for the scheduled work. This crane will join a much larger one in the demolition work, the other has a 300-ton capacity and is already mounted on one of the barges on the way to Coos Bay. This crane will be used on the site at the north end of Front Street to stage and load equipment onto the barges and then will be loaded up and sent to the site on the North Spit. Reed said the two barges are scheduled to arrive around noon Saturday, weather and bar conditions permitting. Work on the New Carissa removal should start in May and take about six months.

hmmm... so what this article is trying to say is that some politician's best friend owns West Coast Contractors and wants some more money for his private yacht..."Hey lets take millions from the taxpayers and remove a ship that doesn't need removing, then we'll take a 6 week vacation to Cabo!!!"

All I can say is "how stupid"
I think there's some people that need a place to live. Tree huggin idiots.

Too late apparantly to stop the removal, where are the environmentalist now? Think of all the sea creatures that will die due to removing this piece of a ship! Look at how messed up the beach will be, and the residents aren't allowed to be on the beach. But it's all good. I guess.

Resident's Opinion wrote on Mar 27, 2008 2:49 PM:

Sure seems to me that the worst of what this ship could have done to the sea and the environment has already been done. I wonder how much damage to the sea, sand and water creatures we will do with the equiptment they will use to move it. Why not just leave it there and let it continue to be a tourist attraction? What a waste of time and money to remove it now.....our area has a lot more important issues and concerns (too many to list) that are screaming for time and money and this is in my opinion just not one of the top priority items!!

such a waste of "our" money , many tourist will love to see the carrisa along with other ship wrecks.

i wish someone would explain why this has to happen

just leave it here , it isnn't hurting anyone or anything

in fact many sea creatures have made their homes on the carrisa
