The following activities and events are scheduled this week and next month on the South Coast.
Tonight
Dancing at Epiphany’s
Epiphany’s offers dancing from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday nights at its ballroom, 1989 Sherman Ave., downtown North Bend.
Swing dancing is offered Thursday nights. There are lessons for the first hour open dancing the rest of the night. The cost is $6 a person, and participants can bring a friend or come alone.
On Friday nights, there is open ballroom dancing. An instructor will be available. The cost is $2 a person, and participants can bring a friend or come alone.

This weekend
Movies at the Egyptian
The Egyptian Theatre offers different movies each weekend.
“Patton” (1970) will play on Friday. As the title suggests, the movie traces the career of World War II general George S. Patton.
“Uncle Buck” (1989) will play on Saturday. Though considered an irresponsible bachelor, Buck (John Candy) becomes babysitter to his brother’s three kids and in the process learns to be a family man.
“Camelot” (1967) will play on Sunday. The film is about King Arthur, Guinevere and Lancelot stars Richard Harris and Vanessa Redgrave.
Coming next week:
* “ET: The Extra Terrestrial,” (1982) a fundraiser for Blossom Gulch Elementary School, will play on Friday, April 4;
* “The French Connection” (1971) will play on Saturday, April 5; and
* “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” (1953) will play on Sunday, April 6.
Friday and Saturday shows start at 7 p.m., and Sunday shows start at 3 p.m.
The box office opens one hour before showtimes. General admission is $4, $3.50 for seniors and those 12 and under, and $3 for members. All tickets for benefit shows cost $5.

Next week
Democrats meet
Reedsport area Democrats will meet at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1, at Bedrock’s Pizzeria on 2165 Winchester Ave., Reedsport. The presidential primary race will be discussed as well as plans for the upcoming fall election.

Carnations for sale
Monday, March 31, is Doctor’s Day. Because the symbol for Doctor’s Day is the red carnation, members of the Southwestern Oregon Medical Society Alliance will sell red carnations at Bay Clinic and North Bend Medical Center so patients can express gratitude to physicians. Profits from the sales will be donated to the Waterfall Clinic for children’s medical needs.
First observed on March 30, 1933, the idea was conceived by Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, to show gratitude to physicians for the many hours of medical services they provide in their communities.

PEO members’ lunch
Regional members of the Philanthropic Educational Organization Sisterhood will meet for its annual spring luncheon at noon on Saturday, April 5, at Southwestern College in Empire Hall Lakeview rooms, 1988 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay. The theme of the luncheon will be “April Showers.”
Nine chapters of the P.E.O. representing Bandon, Coos Bay, Coquille, Florence and Reedsport will gather to renew friendships and welcome any unaffiliated members, a press release said.

P.E.O. is a philanthropic and educational organization which promotes the education of women and raises money for scholarships and educational grants, according to a press release.
Spaghetti fundraiser
The annual Jan-Hil Preschool Spaghetti Feed and Carnival fundraiser will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 3, at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, 2160 Elm Ave., Reedsport.
Admission will be $6 for adults, $4 for children or $20 for a family. The meal will include spaghetti, garlic bread, salad, drinks and dessert. Carnival tickets will be on sale for 4 for $1. Games in the mini-carnival will include a beanbag toss, fishpond and more. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will match up to $600 of the proceeds.
Jan-Hil is a nonprofit Christian preschool, operated by Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church. Enrollment is open for the 2008-2009 school year.

Contestant to speak
Miss Coos County Outstanding Teen Contestant Ashlee Garton-Rutland will present a lecture on the prevention of cruelty to animals at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1, in the large meeting room at the North Bend Public Library, 1800 Sherman Ave. Garton-Rutland will present facts about the prevalence of animal cruelty in the community and on the national level.
Girl’s Night Out
April’s Girl’s Night Out, “Knead it, Bake it, Eat it,” will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, at Frazier’s banquet room, 23 E. First St., Coquille. The cost is $7.50 inclusive, and meal options are a mini chef salad or finger-food sandwiches.
Sherry Chestnut will teach participants how to make bread. Cassie Bouska will sing, and Nancy Reed of Union will be the guest speaker. Free nursery will be provided by request.
