Chelsea Hitchcock had a two-run double with two outs in the seventh inning to give host Reedsport a dramatic come-from-behind win over visiting Toledo and a sweep of a nonleague doubleheader on Saturday.
The Braves won the first game 7-3 and rallied with three runs in the seventh for a 4-2 victory in the nightcap.
Toledo had taken a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning, but Reedsport started the seventh with a walk by Tonni Willis, a single by Hannah Smith and a walk by Shelby Wiggans. Brianna Ekelund scored Willis with a sacrifice fly and Hitchcock came through with her big hit.
“It’s nice to see when they step up,” said Reedsport coach Casey Howard. “Toledo is a good team.”
Hitchcock had two hits in the nightcap, while Ekelund had a big game in the opener, with a double and triple. Lyndsay Holden had a double and two RBIs in the first game and another double in the nightcap. Stephanie Clardy had doubles in each game.
The Braves visit Waldport today, weather permitting.
Eagles sweep Pirates
Marshfield managed just six hits all day and was swept by host Eagle Point 6-1, 6-3 in a nonleague doubleheader.
Ashley Josephson had a home run in the opener and Karlie Stephens struck out 15 batters for Eagle Point.
The Pirates took a 3-1 lead in the second game, but Eagle Point came back for the win.
BASEBALL
Pirates swept
Marshfield couldn’t take advantage of late opportunities in either game and was swept in a doubleheader by visiting Cottage Grove, 3-2 and 5-3, on Saturday.
The Pirates scored a run in the seventh inning of the first game, but couldn’t push another across. In the nightcap, Cottage Grove took the lead with a three-run fifth inning and the Pirates couldn’t battle back.
“We didn’t capitalize on the things we had,” said Marshfield coach Quintin Hall. “We’re getting better. We just need to capitalize.”
In the first game, the Lions scored all their runs in the fifth inning, with just one hit. Marshfield gave up three walks and two errors in the inning.
Geoff Van Pulliam, Kane Rowley and Ryan Campbell combined to give up just three hits to the Lions, but the Pirates managed just four of their own, including a double by Adam Reed.
Reed had two hits, including another double, in the nightcap.
Cody Slack had an outstanding day on defense for the Pirates, with several great catches in centerfield, Hall said.
Cameron Hamilton had two doubles in the second game for Cottage Grove.
Marshfield is at Madras for a doubleheader today and visits North Bend on Wednesday.
Braves fall twice
Toledo rallied for a 10-5 win over host Reedsport in eight innings Saturday.
The Braves led 5-2 before the Boomers scored twice in the sixth and once in the seventh to force extra innings.
After the first game, Toledo’s junior varsity team topped the Braves 11-9.
Travis Leach, Cory Christoffersen and Gunner Kaufmann all had doubles for the Braves in the first game and Taylor Palermo had a double in the nightcap.
Tigers swept on road
Bandon lost twice to Del Norte’s junior varsity team, but gained valuable experience on Saturday.
“The most important thing is we were able to play 14 innings and get everyone on the roster some swings,” said Bandon coachGary Chrismon after the Warriors won 10-1 and 9-4. “Sometimes, as coaches, we get caught up in performance. That puts pressure on the kids.
“But we are only five games into this thing, and our goal is to get better every day.”
Jimmy Mack had two RBIs for the Tigers in the nightcap, with a double and groundout. Archie Garrett drove in Bandon’s lone run in the opener with a third-inning single. |
