Arizona State women hold off Temple

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Arizona State followed an uncharacteristic poor first half with 51⁄2 minutes of brilliant basketball, and that was enough to dismiss upset-minded Temple from the NCAA tournament.

Lauren Lacey opened the second half with two straight baskets to ignite a 13-point run, and the Sun Devils pulled away to a 61-54 victory Sunday night to advance to the second round of the Oklahoma City Regional.

Sixth-seeded Arizona State (22-10) will face No. 3 seed Duke, a 78-57 winner over Murray State, on Tuesday night.

Lacey scored 14 points and Jill Noe had 12 for the Sun Devils, who have won six of seven and are 16-5 after a lackluster 6-5 start.

“I’m very proud of my team and the effort, coming all the way over here and playing a team of that caliber,” Arizona State coach Charli Turner Thorne said.

Purdue 66, Utah 59

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Kalika France and FahKara Malone scored 17 points each, and ninth-seeded Purdue beat No. 8 Utah.

Danielle Campbell added 14 points for the Boilermakers (19-14).

Leilani Mitchell had 14 points, nine assists and six rebounds for Utah, but also had seven turnovers. Morgan Warburton led the Utes (27-5) with 18 points, and Kalee Whipple added 14 points and nine rebounds.

Duke 78, Murray State 58

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Wanisha Smith scored 16 points and the third-seeded Blue Devils never trailed, cruising past Murray State.

Duke has been to the NCAA tournament 15 times, including 14 straight, without losing its opening game. The Blue Devils (24-9) can earn a berth in the round of 16 for the 11th consecutive season by defeating Arizona State on Tuesday.

Ashley Hayes scored 26 for the Racers (24-8), champions of the Ohio Valley Conference.

Notre Dame 75, SMU 62

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Ashley Barlow had 20 points, a career-high 12 rebounds, four steals and three assists, leading fifth-seeded Notre Dame into the second round to face Oklahoma.

The Fighting Irish (24-8) overcame 40.6 percent shooting from the floor with a 49-26 advantage on the glass, pulling down nearly as many offensive rebounds (24) as defensive.

Janielle Dodds and Jillian Samuels each had 15 points to lead the 12th-seeded Mustangs (24-9).

Oklahoma 69, Illinois St. 61

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Fourth-seeded Oklahoma started the second half with a 13-0 run, then held off a late rally to beat No. 13 seed Illinois State.

Courtney Paris had 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Sooners to extend her double-double streak to 91 consecutive games. Ashley Paris scored 13 points for Oklahoma (22-8), which escaped the upset bid to snap a three-game losing streak.

Kristi Cirone led Illinois State (26-7) with 22 points.

Spokane Regional

Maryland 80, Copin State 66

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Top-seeded Maryland pulled away in the second half, but struggled to put away Coppin State, 80-66 Sunday in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Crystal Langhorne had 25 points and 12 rebounds, Marissa Coleman scored 17 and Laura Harper had 14 for the Terrapins (31-3).

Rashida Suber scored 25 points and Shalamar Oakley had 20 for Coppin State.

Nebraska 61, Xavier 58

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Nebraska led the entire game and by 15 in the second half, then held off a furious comeback by Xavier.

Kelsey Griffin matched a season-high with 26 points for the eighth-seeded Cornhuskers (21-11). Jerri Taylor scored 19 points for Xavier (24-9).

Greensboro Regional

Connecticut 89, Cornell 47

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — Maya Moore scored 17 points to lead a balanced offense and top-ranked UConn (33-1) beat No. 16 seed Cornell.

Allie Fedorowicz and Gretchen Gregg scored eight points each to lead Cornell (20-9).

Texas 72, Minnesota 55

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — Brittainy Raven scored 19 points and the eighth-seeded Longhorns routed Minnesota.

Erneisha Bailey added 16 for Texas (22-12). Emily Fox led ninth-seeded Minnesota (20-12) with 23 points.

Virginia 86, UC Santa Barbara 52

NORFOLK, Va. — Lyndra Littles scored 17 points and the Cavaliers (24-9) used a 16-0 run early in the second half to break open their first-round game.

Jessica Wilson finished with 13 points for the Gauchos (23-8).

Old Dominion 82, Liberty 62

NORFOLK, Va. — Shahida Williams scored 20 points on 10-for-11 shooting and the Monarchs (30-4) ended their six-game losing streak in the NCAA tournament.

Megan Frazee led Liberty (28-4) with 19 points.

New Orleans Regional

North Carolina 85, Bucknell 50

NORFOLK, Va. — Top-seeded North Carolina opened the game with a 21-2 run and coasted to a win over Bucknell.

LaToya Pringle had 19 points and Erlana Larkins and Rashanda McCants had 15 each for the Tar Heels. Lauren Schober led the Bison (16-16) with 13 points.

Georgia 67, Iowa 61

NORFOLK, Va. — Tasha Humphrey made a go-ahead turnaround jumper with 58 seconds left and Ashley Houts hit eight free throws in the final 41 seconds for Georgia (23-9).

Kristi Smith led Iowa (21-11) with 17 points and Wendy Ausdemore had 16.

Kansas State 69, Chattanooga 59

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — Little-used reserve Kelsey Nelson scored a career-high 20 points to help fifth-seeded Kansas State (22-9) snap No. 12 Chattanooga’s 24-game streak.

Laura Hall scored 19 points and Brooke Hand added 15, hitting five 3-pointers for Chattanooga (29-4).

Louisville 81, Miami (Ohio) 67

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — Chauntise Wright had 21 points and seven rebounds, Angel McCoughtry scored 20 points and fourth-seeded Louisville (25-9)beat No. 13 Miami of Ohio. Amanda Jackson led MAC champion Miami (23-11) with 22 points, 16 in the second half.

Greensboro Regional

Rutgers 85, Robert Morris 42

DES MOINES, Iowa — Rutgers got the fresh start it was looking for, thanks in part to an overmatched opponent.

Kia Vaughn led four players in double figures with 22 points and second-seeded Rutgers (25-6) routed 15th-seeded Robert Morris (23-10) 85-42 on Saturday in the first round of the Greensboro Regional.

The Scarlet Knights, who stumbled into the NCAA tournament on a two-game losing streak, will play seventh-seeded Iowa State in the second round Tonight.

Iowa State 58, Georgia Tech 55

DES MOINES, Iowa — Alison Lacey hit a running shot in the lane with 47.4 seconds left and added two free throws to lift Iowa State (21-12)  past Georgia Tech.

Jill Ingram led Georgia Tech with 21 points, 17 in the second half.

California 77, San Diego 60

STANFORD, Calif. — Ashley Walker dominated the inside with 21 points and 12 rebounds, Devanei Hampton scored 22 points and the third-seeded Golden Bears  (27-6) won their first NCAA tournament game in 15 years.

Cal took advantage of the opportunity to play close to home on Stanford’s campus after losing in the first round the past two years in Pennsylvania.

Sam Child scored 14 points for San Diego (19-13).

George Washington 66, Auburn 56

STANFORD, Calif. — Jessica Adair had 17 points and 13 rebounds, leading sixth-seeded George Washington (26-6) to a hard-fought first-round win over No. 11 Auburn (20-12). DeWanna Bonner led Auburn with 16 points.

Oklahoma City Regional

Texas A&M 91,

Texas-San Antonio 52

BATON ROUGE, La. — Morenike Atunrase scored 19 points off the bench to lead Texas A&M (27-7) to a rout of Texas-San Antonio (23-10).

No. 15 seed Texas-San Antonio, making its first appearance in the tournament, attempted only 15 shots in the first half. The Roadrunners committed 30 turnovers, allowing the Aggies to score 38 points off them. Monica Gibbs led Texas-San Antonio with 14 points.

Hartford 59, Syracuse 55

BATON ROUGE, La. — MaryLynne Schaefer scored 19 points, including a 3-pointer with 13 seconds left to put 10th-seeded Hartford ahead and then added a pair of free throws to give the Hawks (28-5) a victory over Syracuse.

Erica Morrow led seventh-seeded Syracuse (22-9) with 17 points.

Spokane Regional

Stanford 85, Cleveland State 47

STANFORD, Calif. — Jayne Appel scored 29 of her career-high 33 points in the first half to help the second-seeded Stanford (31-3) roll to a victory against Cleveland State (19-14). Kailey Klein had 16 points for Cleveland State.

UTEP 92, Western Kentucky 60

STANFORD, Calif. — Natasha Lacy had 19 points to lead UTEP(28-3) to a win in its NCAAtournament debut.

Baylor 88, Fresno State 67

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Angela Tisdale scored 26 points and her taller teammates dominated on the boards in Baylor’s victory over Fresno State.

Baylor (25-6), the 2005 national champion, never trailed against the Bulldogs (22-11), who were first- and short-time visitors to the tournament.

Senior guard Tierre Wilson scored 23 points to lead Fresno State, and freshman Emma Andrews added 15.

Pittsburgh 63, Wyoming 58

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Shavonte Zellous scored 21 points, Sophronia Sallard had 15 and Mallorie Winn hit a huge 3-pointer with 2:27 remaining to help Pittsburgh (23-10) beat Wyoming.

Justyna Podziemska led the No. 11 seeded Cowgirls (24-7) with 23 points.

West Virginia 61, New Mexico 60

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Chakhia Cole scored 22 points, including the game-winning jumper with 17.5 seconds left and West Virginia (25-7) eked out a win and moved on to play Vanderbilt.

New Mexico (20-13) had a last-second chance to spring the upset, but a bank shot by Brandi Kimble was too hard and Dionne Marsh’s offensive rebound putback came up short.

Vanderbilt 75, Montana 47

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Freshman Hannah Tuomi scored 14 points, Christina Wirth added 13 and Liz Sherwood had 12 to help fourth-seeded Vanderbilt(24-8) beat overmatched Montana.

New Orleans Regional

Marist 76, DePaul 57

BATON ROUGE, La. — Rachele Fitz scored 23 points and Marist(32-2) closed the game with a 32-2 run to beat DePaul.

Allie Quigley led DePaul(20-12) with 15 points. Deirdre Naughton added 13.

LSU 66, Jackson State 32

BATON ROUGE, La. — Sylvia Fowles scored 16 points and then called it a night.

No. 2 seed LSU held Jackson State to 23 percent from the field (12-52).

Oklahoma State 85,

East Tennessee State 73

DES MOINES, Iowa — Andrea Riley had 26 points and five assists to help Oklahoma State(26-7) top East Tennessee State.

It wasn’t the sharpest game Oklahoma State has played this season. The third-seeded Cowgirls committed 21 turnovers and never could blow it open.

Oklahoma State won in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1996. Maria Cordero had a season-high 23 points and nine rebounds, Taylor Hardeman scored 13 and Shaunte Smith added 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Florida St. 60, Ohio St. 49

DES MOINES, Iowa — Ohio State is going home early yet again — and this time, it wasn’t even close.

Tanae Davis-Cain scored 27 points, one shy of her career high, and Mara Freshour added 14 points and 12 rebounds to help 11th-seeded Florida State upset sixth-seeded Ohio State.

The Seminoles, a somewhat surprising at-large pick after losing seven of their last 11 games, sure looked as though they belonged against the listless Buckeyes. Florida State (19-13) extended its streak of first-round victories to six dating to 1991.
