The Coos County Democratic Central Committee has come out in opposition to the proposed liquefied natural gas terminal on Coos Bay’s North Spit.

At its monthly meeting this week, the committee passed a resolution calling on Gov. Ted Kulongoski and other elected officials to try to stop the LNG terminal proposed by Jordan Cove Energy Project.

The group opposes the project for several reasons. It noted the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has failed to provide an independent assessment of the demand for natural gas in the state.

Also, LNG ships would disrupt commercial and recreational fishing and fish habitat would be lost as a result of the construction. Finally, the group suggested the terminal would be a detriment because importing natural gas would not help Oregon meet its goal of having 25 percent of its energy produced by renewable sources by 2025.

The organization said its opposition does not extend to a proposed container terminal on the North Spit.

Molly Ford, vice chairwoman of the organization, said the decision was made after lots of consideration.

“It’s something that has been discussed for a while,” she said.

Wonder how much the threat of an LNG terminal is keeping such things as Home Depot, southbound air flights, and other sensible business away from Coos Bay?

Seems a safe bet that if the LNG tankers ever do show up here, then our local economy will really go into the tank.

Good for someone to show some gumption and stand up to the Feds and their FERC legislation that violates state rights. Some locals seem to have failed high school civics. The right for citizens to speak out is the essence of our democracy; doesn't mean they are telling you how to live, just expressing their right of free speech. So go ahead and express yours! For my part I don't think that these mega industrial and/or resource extraction developments are the key to future economic prosperity. If you think so you had better check your history books.

This is why I am leaving this beautiful country, everyone is opposed to any type of change for the better.

Molly, democrats are big hypocrites on this issue. Until people support some change in the Bay Area, unemployment will not only be high not only Oregon, but the entire United States. People are hurting in Coos Bay and all sensible fingers point directly at democrat minded simpletons as the problem!

Former Resident,

Regarding "...the reason for opposition to the LNG terminal has nothing to do with the reasons stated in the article, but because it is a popular thing to do."

How dare the local Democratic Party represent the popular/majority opinion of the local residents!

;)

Sometimes the reasons stated are the actual reasons. That is the case with the Coos Dems. You can read all you want into it, but most times, including this time, it's just that.

Several arguments were left out, like explosions, because they couldn't agree on the validity. These were the facts/arguments that were agreed on and they pointed toward no LNG.

The terminal, I'm sure, is a separate issue to be taken up at a later date. No one knows what the outcome of a vote, if any, would be. I am sure that it would deal with the facts of that issue only, though. If addressed, I'm sure that it would be based on thoughtful evaluation of facts and not emotion.

If you think that the Coos Dems are trying to tell the rest of coos county how to live then you've never been to a Coos Dems meeting. They are saying how they would like to live.

I, for one, appreciate the Dems taking a stand on LNG.

I would venture to say the reason for opposition to the LNG terminal has nothing to do with the reasons stated in the article, but because it is a popular thing to do. The Dems figure if they come out in opposition, they will get the votes.

you're right! They don't get it and these are some of the very same people trying to tell the rest of us how to live and what the county needs. Nothing will change until the city becomes too big for the little selfserving people to push their private agendas.

FERC mis-info wrote on Mar 24, 2008 11:36 AM:

When are people going to learn....FERC does not have to determine that Oregon needs all of the natural gas that will be delivered to the proposed LNG terminal. The fact that California or Washington might also need the natural gas could be reason enough to approve the proposed terminal. Learn the facts, people. Go to the FERC website and read if nothing else. You can't close Oregon's borders to interstate commerce!

Molly, the container terminal is going to do the same things to the spit that your group opposes. Why have you left it off your list?
