Prep Recap for March 20: Marshfield girls show improvement

Marshfield’s girls tennis team had an improved outing, but lost all its matches to visiting Grants Pass on Wednesday.
Two of the matches were three-set battles that lasted more than 90 minutes.
Brittany Morris fell 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 to Victoria Zhu at No. 4 singles and Katelyn Richmond and Amber Owen lost 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 to Emily Fuller and Serena Hamann at No. 3 doubles.
“Amber and Katelyn played their hearts out,” said Marshfield coach Angie Kemp. “I’m real excited about them.”
Meanwhile, the team’s other players also had better matches, even though they didn’t get wins.
“I saw a big improvement,” Kemp said. “It was a good experience. Everyone felt a lot better this week than last week.”
Bulldogs fall
Grants Pass blanked host North Bend 8-0 on Wednesday.
Amanda Keith took the first set to a tiebreaker before losing at No. 1 singles, while Kaja Coresko won four games in each set at No. 4 singles for the Bulldogs.
BASEBALL

Red Devils edge Braves
Coquille beat host Reedsport 2-1 in the league opener for both schools on Wednesday.
The Red Devils scored both runs in the fourth inning. Shane Coleman singled and Joseph Savala and Heston Altenbach walked. After David King struck out two batters, he hit Jon Binford to bring in Coquille’s first run. Savala then scored on a passed ball.
The Braves got their run in the first, when Cory Christoffersen reached on an error, stole second, moved up on a passed ball and scored on an RBI groundout by King.
Both King and Altenbach had strong games on the mound, allowing just three hits each.
King struck out 13 batters and walked three. Altenbach had 10 strikeouts, walked seven and hit two.
“We left nine guys on base,” said Reedsport coach Todd Harrington. “We had our chances. Their kid pitched a good ballgame. He kept the ball up on us and we chased him and chased him and chased him.”
Ryan Smith had all three Reedsport hits.
Tigers top Panthers
Bandon scored three runs in the fifth inning to beat host Gold Beach 3-2 in the league opener for the two schools.
Jordan Siemer had two hits and scored one of the runs for the Tigers. Archie Garrett and Jimmy Mack also scored in the inning.
Travis Moore had a single and walk and scored both Gold Beach runs. Mackenzie Burdett had two hits.
Bandon’s Michael Bennett pitched a six-hitter with six strikeouts to pick up the win. Mitch McDonald and Ricco Lang combined on a five-hitter for Gold Beach. Lang struck out seven batters in the final three innings.

Panthers shut out Tigers
Molly Hockema pitched a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts to lead Gold Beach to a 6-0 win over visiting Bandon in the league opener on Wednesday.
“Molly did a good job,” Gold Beach coach Jerry Ross said.
The only Bandon hit was a fifth-inning double by Brittany Smith.
The Panthers, meanwhile, scored three runs in both the second and third innings.
Kayla Zuber and Miranda Hunnicutt had back-to-back hits in the second inning and Katherine Zuber and Lindsey McDonald followed with RBIs.
In the third, Katie Walling had a double, Kayla Zuber singled and Hunnicutt doubled.
Walling, Zuber and Hunnicutt had two hits each, with Zuber and Hunnicutt each scoring twice.
Braves get win
Reedsport took advantage of multiple walks by Coquille’s pitching staff to beat the Red Devils 10-0 in six innings in the league opener on Wednesday.
The Braves managed just three hits in the game, but broke open a 1-0 contest with three runs in the fourth inning and five more in the fifth.
Brianna Ekelund, Hannah Smith and Tonni Willis had two runs each for the Braves.
Tailor Nunn had a solid outing on the mound, striking out eight batters without any walks and allowing just a third-inning single to Mary Meador.
TRACK & FIELD
Siuslaw girls win
Siuslaw’s girls topped three former Sky-Em League rivals in a four-team meet at Marist High School on Wednesday.
The Vikings scored 95 points to beat Marist, Cottage Grove and Junction City.
Alexis Reavis won the shot put with an impressive effort of 39 feet, 9 inches, and also won the high jump by clearing 5 feet and the discus with a throw of 97-4.
Jennifer Hague led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 800 with her winning time of 2:31.70, followed closely by Nadja Warren and Raelyn Robinson. Samantha Pummer won the 3,000 meters in 11:20.70, while Jessica Dodson took the high hurdles (17.59) and Brooke Swesey won the low hurdles (52.60).
Siuslaw’s boys finished fourth, but got wins by Kody Reavis in the javelin (163-8), Dalton Bliss in the 200 (24.18) and Travis Stevens in the 3,000 (9:19.50).
BOYS GOLF
Pirates fourth
Marshfield finished fourth at the Canby Invitational on Tuesday, trailing the host Cougars, Sheldon and Sherwood.
Mike Milner had an 83 to lead the Pirates and Brady George shot an 88.
On Monday, the Pirates won a Midwestern League meet at Trysting Tree in Corvallis. Milner took medalist honors with a 77, while Trevor Smith had an 80 and Jake Graves an 83.

Reedsport finished second to host McKenzie in the Early Bird Invitational at Tokatee on Tuesday.
Cody Savey led the Braves with an 89.
McKenzie’s Casey King took medalist honors with a 5-under 67.
Myrtle Point, which finished fourth, was led by Willy Looney’s 103.

Bulldogs finish third
NorthBend finished third and Marshfield fifth in an eight-school tournament at Trysting Tree on Tuesday.
Sheldon won the title with 406 strokes and SouthEugene was second with 434. NorthBend had 449, Marshfield 474 and Reedsport 502.
Marshfield’s Nicole Nguyen was second overall with a 97, while Hayley McKinley led NorthBend with a 101.
