Brittney Young had a huge day to lead Marshfield to an 11-0 victory over visiting North Bend in a hastily scheduled Civil War softball matchup Wednesday.

The game was scheduled during the day when the weather turned nice. The Pirates had been scheduled to face Reedsport, but the Braves were committed to trying to make up a Sunset Conference game against Coquille.

Young pitched a one-hitter in the five-inning game and had a big day at the plate, with two doubles and a two-run home run. The junior scored three runs and had three RBIs.

On the mound, Young allowed just a second-inning single to Amelia Liggett while striking out five hitters and walking none.

Jayla Tavernier had an RBI triple and a sacrifice fly for the Pirates and Tiffany Wiley and Taylor Scott scored two runs each.

Marshfield coach Floyd Montiel was pleased with how his team played.

“We were just anxious to get outside after being cooped up in the gym the last four days,” he said. “We saw that blue sky open up and we jumped right on it.”

The Pirates were solid in the field, playing an errorless game.

“Defensively, this is the second game in a row where we played real well,” Montiel said. “We’d like the bats to do more, but it’s not too bad for the second game of the year.”
