Community Sports, Fast Breaks for March 15: Gagnon repeats as Two Cities champion

Mark Gagnon of Coos Bay repeated as the overall champion of the South Coast Running Club’s Run Of Two Cities last Saturday.
Gagnon’s time of 41 minutes and 37 seconds on the hilly 10-kilometer course was only 18 seconds slower than his winning effort in 2007.
Lawrence Cheal of Coos Bay, who finished in 43:50, and Doug Veysey of Myrtle Point (44:07), took second and third among the 19 competitors. Jim Clarke of North Bend received the master’s award after finishing in 50:50.
Karen Matson of Coos Bay won the women’s championship in a time of 51:11. She was followed by Tyana Plinski (53:33) and Triena Mueller (56:47), both of Coos Bay.
Randy Hoffine of Coos Bay won the equally difficult 5-kilometer run/walk in 21:36. He was followed by women’s champion Caitlyn McLauchlin of Bandon (27:48) and 81-year old Craig McMicken of Florence (33:24).
All entry fees from the event were donated to Oregon Special Olympics for programs on the South Coast.
Volleyball Standings
The Community Scoreboard section today includes standings and results for the South Coast Women’s Volleyball League.
Results will be included each Saturday when available.
SeaBreeze Track Camp registrations needed
Steve Greif, North Bend High School’s Head Track and Field Coach, will again direct the SeaBreeze Track and Field Camp scheduled for March 24-28, at the North Bend High School Track.
All boys and girls in grades 4-8 are eligible to participate. The program will expose participants to all events of track and field with a mini-meet held at the conclusion.
At least 15 campers are required, so early registration is encouraged to avoid cancellation.
The fee is $40 with a current Boys & Girls Club membership. Forms are available at local schools, the Club office and online or call 267-3635 for more information.
Coaches needed
The Boys & Girls Club still needs Spring Soccer coaches. Volunteer coaches are asked to have a basic knowledge of soccer and be interested in working with young athletes.
The Blossom Gulch first- and second-grade teams are two of the teams in need of coaches.
Anyone interested in assisting the Boys & Girls Club sports program as a volunteer coach, can call 267-3635.
Kindergarten soccer
All boys and girls in kindergarten are eligible to participate in kindergarten soccer through the Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon. Registration forms are available at local schools, the club office or online.
The program will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning April 1 and concluding on April 29, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Southwestern Community College Soccer Field.

Registration for T-ball, baseball and softball
All boys and girls in Kindergarten are eligible to register for T-ball at the Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon. This is a coed program designed to teach the fundamentals of baseball. Teams will be formed, and games will be played beginning in the month of May.
All boys and girls in first-and second-grades are eligible for the coach pitch program. Any boys who register will participate in coach pitch baseball. Any girls who register will participate in a new program — coach pitch softball. This program will focus on the fundamentals of fast-pitch softball, with games beginning in May.
All third- through eight-grade girls may register for fast-pitch softball. Teams will be formed for Under-10, Under-12 and Under-14 players. Participant’s age is as of Dec. 31, 2007. Games for this program will begin in May. The fee for each of these programs is $45 with a current club membership.
