Classic movies at the Egyptian
Thursday, March 20, 2008 9:24 AM PDT

The historic Egyptian Theatre in downtown Coos Bay shows classic movies each weekend. On the marquee this weekend is:

• “Grand Canyon” (1991) will play on Friday and features veteran actors Danny Glover, Steve Martin, Alfre Woodard and others, and has nothing to do with the actually Grand Canyon. Instead, the gap caused by cultures and classes is bridged by friendship in Los Angeles.

• “The Last Voyage” (1960) will play on Saturday. The soon-to-be retired S.S. Claridon really does have its last voyage when its boilers explode, trapping Laurie Henderson and sinking the ship.

• “Ben Hur” (1959) will play on Sunday. In the movie, Charlton Heston stars as Judah Ben-Hur, a Jewish prince unjustly enslaved by a Roman ruler he thought was his friend. The famous chariot race takes place as Ben-Hur seeks to find his enslaved family and take revenge for what happened.

Coming next weekend:

• “Patton” (1970) on Friday, March 28;

• “Uncle Buck” (1989) on Saturday, March 29; and

• “Camelot” (1967) on Sunday, March 30.

Friday and Saturday shows start at 7 p.m., and Sunday shows start at 3 p.m.

The box office opens one hour before showtimes. General admission is $4, $3.50 for seniors and those 12 and under, and $3 for members.

Movies and showtimes are subject to change.
