The girls teams from Coquille and Bandon tied for first place in the annual Small Schools Invitational track and field meet at Bandon on Tuesday, while Brookings-Harbor won the team title for boys.
Several individuals won two events each during the meet.
Coquille’s Frauke Fuchs took both the javelin and 400 meters in the meet, while the Red Devils also got field-event wins by Katlyn Shaw in the high jump and Allison Cook in the shot put.
Bandon’s only win was by Beth Castro in the pole vault.
The Tigers and Red Devils each scored 119 points.
Among other double-winners for the girls, Gold Beach’s Sydney Snook took both the 800 and 1,500 meters. In the longer race, she out-dueled fellow freshman Ally Manley of Brookings-Harbor to win in 5 minutes, 6.67 seconds.
Chelsea Standley of Powers won both the 100 and 200 meters, while Brookings-Harbor’s Kayla Hamm took both hurdles races.
Brookings-Harbor’s boys scored 145 points to easily beat runner-up Bandon, which finished with 109.
Geoff Gowman won both the high jump and intermediate hurdles for the Bruins.
Two athletes won two events each. Reedsport’s Ismael Osorio took both the shot put and discus, while Gold Beach’s Nathan Moore swept the sprints.
The top individual marks were Osorio’s winning throw of 46 feet, 10 inches in the shot put; Cole Scherer’s mark of 169-1 in the javelin; and Casey Cagley of Myrtle Point clearing 13-6 to win the pole vault. All three lead Class 3A in the early season, according to the track and field Web site

Among the girls, Snook leads Class 3A in all three distance races, while Fuchs has the top marks in the javelin and 400, and Castro has the top mark in the pole vault. Standley leads Class 1A in the 100 meters.
BOYS TENNISPirates win againMarshfield got its third win of the season, beating visiting Roseburg 5-3 in a nonleague match Tuesday at the William J. Sweet Memorial Tennis Center.
The Pirates won despite losing two matches in heartbreaking style.
Jon Massie, Brandon Benson and David Stys recorded straight-sets wins for Marshfield in singles play and the Pirates also won the top two doubles matches. Brogan Trull and David Perrin didn’t give up any games in their win at No. 1 doubles, while Markus Boesl and Jamey Moriarty won the first set in a tiebreaker and then cruised to a victory.
Both singles player Zaq Jones and the doubles team of Brealan Mosieur and Andre Van Rooyen lost third-set tiebreakers.
Marshfield coach Paula Massie was proud of her team for its performance.
“Today’s match was tough,” she said. “Roseburg has a good team with a lot of depth.”
Indians edge BulldogsNorth Bend got wins at the top three singles positions in a 5-3 setback to visiting Roseburg on Tuesday.
Cody Ferguson, Kory Isley and Duy Tang took straight-sets wins for North Bend.
Ferguson gave up just one game in his win, while Isley and Tang both were solid in their wins, according to coach Dustin Hood.
BASEBALL/SOFTBALLRain washes away scheduleThe wet weather wiped out the Civil War baseball and softball games scheduled between North Bend and Marshfield on Tuesday, as well as the league openers in both sports for the Sunset Conference.
Gold Beach and Bandon will try to make up their Sunset Conference games today, while Coquille and Reedsport might not get their games in until after spring break because of poor field conditions.
