The following activities and gatherings are scheduled on the South Coast this week and in coming weeks.

Wednesday

Eastern Star bingo

Coos Chapter Eastern Star will host bingo on Wednesday at the Masonic Center, 2002 Union Ave., North Bend. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Concessions will be provided by the North Bend Lodge. There will be cash prizes and new prices. All adults are welcome.

Thursday and Saturday

South Slough events

The first combined Lunch and Learn and Saturdays of the South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve will be held Thursday and Saturday.

Participants will explore the nearshore ocean and estuary waters. The Thursday Lunch and Learn will be held from noon to 1 p.m. at the Milner Crest Education Center, 1255 Hemlock Ave., Coos Bay. Alison LaFeferriere will talk about the effects of the nearshore ocean on the estuary and her shellfish monitoring project in South Slough for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. There is no cost for the lecture, and participants should bring a sack lunch.

The Saturday on the Slough will meet at the South Slough Interpretive Center, on Seven Devils Road, from 9 a.m. to noon. Dr. Steve Rumrill, South Slough’s research coordinator, will conduct a field trip exploring the different hydrogeographic regions from marine dominated waters to fresh water dominated waters. Participants will travel to several sites throughout the estuary and should dress for the weather.  

Each month’s Lunch and Learn and Saturday at the Slough will have its own theme and include a Saturday field experience. The lecture is free, and field day is $5 per person.

Friday, Saturday

Square dancing

Sets in Order Square and Round Dance club will host a St. Patrick’s Day Round Dance Party with Jim and Denise Harris from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, March 21, at the  Coquille Community Center, 115 N. Birch. New dancers are welcome.

A square dance also will be held on Saturday, March 22, with Coleeta Quigley and Denise Harris. Pre-rounds at begin at 7:30 p.m., with square dancing at 8, at the Coquille Community Center.

Easter Sunday

Celebration in Coquille

The public is invited to join in a Resurrection Celebration Easter Sunday at 10 a.m. on Sunday, March 23, at the Coquille Community Building.

Childcare will be provided for children, newborn to 5 years old, beginning at 9:30 a.m. through the service’s end.

Reedsport service

The Lower Umpqua Ministerial Association will host a Community Easter Sunrise Service at 7 a.m. at the Covenant United Methodist Church, on Sunday, March 23. Todd Young, pastor of Highlands Baptist Church, will give the message. Following the service, from 9 to 10 a.m., a special Easter breakfast will be served. Breakfast will include waffles and scrambled eggs.

Unity of Bandon

Unity of Bandon will celebrate an Easter Celebration Service at 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 23.

Participants will discover the deeper meaning of the resurrection experience as being symbolic of our own life journey, according to a press release. All are welcome to join in this celebration, and participants will receive small flowers to plant at home. Youth education will be provided during the service. A ten-week discussion group for Eckhart Tolle’s “A New Earth” is continuing Sunday mornings, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and will be held on Easter Sunday. Participants may join in at any time.

Unity Church is located on U.S. Highway 101, one mile south of 11th Street. For more information, those interested can call 347-4696.

Faith Lutheran Church

Faith Lutheran Church will host a free Community Easter Dinner from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Easter Sunday, March 23. The church is located at 2741 Sherman Ave., North Bend.

The menu will include turkey, ham, scalloped potatoes, green beans, salad and dessert.

All are welcome.

Reedsport egg hunt

The Gardiner-Reedsport Lions Club in conjunction with the Winchester Bay Merchants Association will sponsor the annual Easter Egg Hunt at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 23, at Jim Barrone Park.

The hunt will be divided into groups by age. The Easter Bunny will be there with prizes and candy and ready to meet new friends. Activities start at 12:30 p.m., including relay races: The “Bunny Hop” race, the three-legged race and an egg-on-spoon race.

Participants also can bring any old eyeglasses, even old sunglasses, for the Lions Club to recycle for use in other countries.

‘Passion of Christ’ film

Mel Gibson’s “Passion of the Christ” will be shown at 6 p.m. on Easter Sunday, March 23, at Lakeside Assembly of God church,  230 N. Eighth St.

There will be no charge. The film depicts the suffering of Christ and his death on the cross for the sins of the world, a press release said. The film is rated “R” and based on the Gospel’s accounts of Jesus’ last hours before and during his crucifixion. The film is not suitable for children.

Next week

Rental owners

Tenant rights will be the topic for this month’s Rental Owners of Southwestern Oregon general meeting on Thursday, March 27, at the Red Lion Hotel, 1313 N. Bayshore Drive.  Dinner will be at 6 p.m.  and will cost $13.75, which includes gratuity. The meeting will begin at 6:45.

The speaker will be Kristina Thompson, an attorney with Oregon Legal Services.  She will speak and take questions about tenant rights. The public is invited to attend. For more information, those interested can call JuLene Gerami at 751-9415.

April 1

Daughters of the Nile

The local chapter of the Daughters of the Nile will meet on the first Tuesday of the month at Coney Station, 295 S. Broadway, Coos Bay. Daughters of the Nile is a philanthropic women’s organization made up of relatives of Shriners. They sew and support the 22 Shriners hospitals throughout the United States.

The local club sews, sends toys and sends children’s magazine subscriptions to the Portland and Honolulu Shrine hospitals. For more information about membership, those interested can call 888-0805.

April 12

Ballroom dancers

Celebrate spring with the South Coast Ballroom Dancers at a buffet dinner and dance, featuring the Juke Box Kings, on Saturday, April 12, at The Mill Casino-Hotel, 3201 Tremont St., North Bend. Gathering and a no-host bar will begin at 5:30 p.m. A buffet dinner will be served at 6, with dancing to follow from 7 to 10. Semi-formal attire is suggested.

Members can receive a discounted price of $25, with gratuity included, until March 20. Tickets  will be available for non-members for $35 March 21-30.  A vegetarian entree is available upon request when purchasing tickets.
