Marshfield’s boys tennis team posted its second shutout of the spring, blanking visiting Marist 8-0 in a match played indoors at the William J. Sweet Memorial Tennis Center.

The Pirates dominated the singles competition, giving up a total of five games in the four matches. A few of the doubles matches were closer, but the Pirates prevailed in all of them.

“Our team is looking really strong with a lot of depth this year,” said Marshfield coach Paula Massie, who was particularly pleased with the singles players.

“All of our singles players were rock solid today,” she said.

Jon Massie won at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-1, while Brandon Benson, Zaq Jones and David Stys lost just one game each.

In doubles, Brogan Trull and Markus Boesl fought back from a deficit in the first set for a 6-4, 7-5 win.

The teams of Jamey Moriarty and Brealan Mosier and Jeff Stephens and Josh Bott won their matches relatively easily.

“To clinch the shutout, Matt Barnes and Andre Van Rooyen played in a really close match, edging out their opponents 13-11 in a super tie breaker,” Paula Massie said.

Bulldogs win

North Bend swept the singles matches and beat visiting Marist 5-3 in a nonleague contest Friday.

Cody Ferguson, Kory Isley, Duy Tang and Evan Ames all won their singles matches in straight sets for the Bulldogs.

“Cody played well — his backhand was extremely solid today and he served big, too,” said North Bend coach Dustin Hood. “All the singles guys had big matches.”

Alan Landrum and Michael Kahler teamed to clinch the victory with a win at No. 2 doubles.

BASEBALL

Pirates win two

Marshfield swept a nonleague doubleheader against Mazama on Friday, with the games played at Ashland because the fields in Klamath Falls were not in playing condition.

The Pirates will play two more in Ashland today against the Grizzlies.

First-year Marshfield coach Quintin Hall was thrilled with his team’s effort in the opener.

“I’m very excited for the season,” Hall said. “It was a good group of kids to inherit.

“I’m pleased with how we performed. I don’t think that’s our best baseball.”

Hall has encouraged his team that, while a strong start is nice, it’s the Midwestern League season the Pirates are aiming for.

“The biggest thing I told the kids when we started out is we’re working for three weeks from now, not for today,” he said.

Marshfield got the bats going in the opening twin bill, pounding out 10 hits in the first game and 12 in the nightcap.

Levi Meline had a double and triple in the first game, while Geoff Van Pulliam was 3-for-4 with two runs.

The Pirates built a 6-1 lead before an error led to two Mazama runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Jesse McClintock, Kane Rowley and Ryan Campbell combined on a six-hitter for Marshfield.

In the nightcap, Marshfield scored two runs in the first, four in the second and six in the fourth.

Cody Slack was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBIs. Adam Reed was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while Meline was 2-for-3, including a double, and scored three runs. McClintock and Brandon Wright had two runs each and Alexz Elletson had a double.

Van Pulliam, Tyler Graves, Meline, Elliot Aurdahl and Justin Riddle combined to pitch a six-hitter.

The start was a great one for Marshfield, which won only five games last year.

“We’re shooting for that third playoff spot,” Hall said.

Marshfield’s junior varsity team, which won just two games last year, matched that total Friday by sweeping its doubleheader with Mazama 13-8 and 19-8.
