PORTLAND (AP) — A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck 112 miles off the Oregon coast Saturday morning but no serious damage or injuries were reported.

The quake occurred at 7:44 a.m. west of Port Orford, according to Angel Gutierrez, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colo.

The quake was relatively shallow, about 6 miles down, and no tsunami alert was issued as a result, Gutierrez said.

Minor earthquakes are common in this region of the Pacific Ocean along the Cascadia subduction zone.
