Valerie Vick said she has adhered to the same meticulous standards since she opened Stonewater Day Spa in Coos Bay.
She performs facial and body treatments on men, women and teens, and said she does everything she can to give each of her clients individual attention.
“I always talk to my clients and ask what they’d like to see when they’re through,” the youthful 37-year-old woman said. “I love working on a goal with my client, with their skin.”
So far, she is running her business on her own, offering a menu of skin care services that includes several types of facials, chemical peels, eyebrow and eyelash tinting, waxing, back treatments, an herbal body treatment and mini treatments for elbows, hands and eyes.
Vick’s product line is Bioelements. She carries a variety of cleansers, exfoliators, toners, eye and lip treatments, moisturizers, masks and more. On her shelf sit several agents, vitamins and minerals that can be added to skin care products for customization.
She said she does not always use the same treatment each time she sees regular clients.
“Sometimes you might be more stressed, so you’re less hydrated,” she said. “Last month you might have gotten more exercise. That’s all going to show in your skin.”
Vick is a licensed aesthetician in both Oregon and California. She is a certified member of the Association of Skin Care Professionals. She has certification in speed waxing, body sugaring (similar to waxing), pre- and post-op plastic surgery treatments and working with skin conditions like acne and rosacea. She also learned about skin conditions while living with her mother.
“Growing up with a nurse, you kind of understand how medications affect your skin,” Vick said.
In August, she moved from Sacramento, Calif., where she worked for two different spas. In her business, Vick said, she wants to provide better customer service.
“Anytime you work for someone else, there are always things you’d want for your clients,” Vick said. “I need to do what’s best for my client, safest for my client and best for my client’s skin ... and the money will come.
“Ultimately, this is just really what I love to do.”
