North Bend’s eighth-grade varsity team continued an impressive two seasons with a win last weekend at the Crescent City Jaycees Tournament in California.

The Bullpups remained unbeaten over the past two years.

“I’ve never been around a team as exciting as this group,” said John Lucero, who has coached most of the players during a number of non-school tournaments. “They’re fun to watch.”

At Crescent City, North Bend won the AA division by beating Middletown 66-58, McKinleyville 46-31 and El Portal 43-34.

North Bend’s Jon Harris and Aaron Mateski were named to the all-tournament team and Logan Lucero was the most valuable player. Lucero also set a new tournament record in the “hoop shoot” competition, which includes points for baskets from various distances with 76 points. He hit a number of 3-pointers in the contest.

Other team members are Brady Snelgrove, Kai Johnson, Jordan Tiller, Jantzen Moeller, Clay Brown, Austin Townsend and Dutch Knight. The group is coached by Bruce Carpani.

“They’re just a really good group of kids and they’re good friends,” John Lucero said. “These guys are the future for North Bend. I think when this group is juniors, there’s a lot of people saying (they might be) state champions, and I don’t think it’s just talk.”

The Crescent City tournament included 56 teams in seven different divisions.

In the A-2 division, Coquille Valley School finished third, beating Pacific Union 64-55, losing to eventual champion Pacheco 56-44 and beating Terrace 45-44.

David Dill and Tanner Howard were named to the all-tournament team and Dill finished third in the division’s hoop shoot contest.

Other team members included Andres Esparza, Taylon Sherrill, Tyler Stephens, Cole Waddington and Derrick Yarnell. The group is coached by Willy Layton.

In the AAA division, Sunset Middle School finished sixth, losing to Creekside 54-47, beating Crescent Elk 79-78, and falling to Sunny Brae 55-48.

Sunset’s Ty Cutting was named to the all-tournament team. Others on the team include Colton Thurman, Zach Thrall, Eddie Rodriguez, Derek Duenas, Sergio Marroquin, Frank Montenegro, Max Whitley, Dalton Milburn, Brady Davidson and Alex Flaherty. The team is coached by Doug Fendell and Adam Drew.
