CORVALLIS — Marist needed every free throw it could make, and that was just enough.

The third-ranked Spartans hit their last 12 foul shots to claim their fifth boys basketball state title with a 50-47 win against No. 2 Brookings-Harbor in the 4A championship game at Gill Coliseum on Friday night.

Chase Bansemer hit two 3-pointers in the last 30 seconds to keep Brookings-Harbor (23-3) close. But it wasn’t enough as Marist (25-5) made 14 of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Bansemer’s long 3-point attempt just before the buzzer was well short.

Dustin Waldron had 16 points and six rebounds and Gianni Carter added 13 points for Marist, of Eugene.

Bansemer had 15 points and nine rebounds for Brookings-Harbor, which had not lost to an Oregon team this season until Friday. Nick Taresh added 10 points for the Bruins.

Marist went ahead for good after Waldron broke a 38-38 tie with scored four straight points.

Michael Wood got the Bruins within one on a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1:21 left.

Marist’s Steve Bustrin and Carter each hit a pair of free throws before Bansemer’s 3-pointer closed the deficit to 46-44 with 26 seconds left.

Bansemer answered after two more Carter foul shots with another 3. Marist’s David Berney added two free throws with seven seconds remaining.

The Bruins were making their first state title game appearance.

Brookings-Harbor had a 14-4 lead just more than four minutes into the game. Marist scored the last eight points of the first quarter to cut the deficit to 16-14.

Marist also scored the first eight points of the second quarter. A 3-pointer by Wood ended the Bruins’ scoring drought of nearly 10 minutes and Marist’s 16-0 run.

Also Friday, Hidden Valley won third place with a 43-32 win against Skyline Conference rival Phoenix. Phoenix finished fifth. Newport took the fourth-place game with a 64-61 overtime win against Stayton.

Class 4A Girls

Sutherlin 28, Hidden Valley 26

Defense was king Friday, and Sutherlin was left wearing the crown.

Fifth-ranked Sutherlin made up for a poor offensive performance with solid defense, defeating No. 7 Hidden Valley 28-26 for the OSAA Class 4A girls state championship at Gill Coliseum.

Heather Weber’s two free throws with 23 seconds remaining helped give the Bulldogs the championship in their first title-game appearance.

A 12-footer by Hidden Valley’s Laura Silva from the right side of the floor was off the mark at the buzzer.

Tess Bennett had 10 points and four rebounds for Sutherlin, which took its first lead of the game on Weber’s first foul shot. Jamie Richardson had 10 points and six steals for Hidden Valley, of Grants Pass.

For the game, Sutherlin shot 11-of-24 from the field after shooting 3-of-10 in the first half. Hidden Valley was 8-of-33. Sutherlin had 17 turnovers (13 in the first half) and Hidden Valley eight.

The game was tied twice in the closing minutes after Hidden Valley entered the fourth quarter with a 17-15 lead.

Bennett tied it at 23-23 with 2:33 left off a backcourt steal by Weber. The teams then traded conventional three-point plays, first by Hidden Valley’s Jamie Richardson and then Sutherlin’s Sierra Terrel-Perez.

Sutherlin turned the tables on Hidden Valley, running about one minute off the clock before Weber was fouled.

Hidden Valley used a timeout to set up a final play, but Sutherlin did a good job of keeping the Mustangs away from the basket.

The teams narrowly avoided the OSAA record for the lowest combined points in a girls championship game. Glencoe defeated Springfield 27-26 in the 1990 AAA championship.

Earlier Friday, Marist defeated Stayton 36-31 in the third-place game. Stayton finished fifth. Cottage Grove got past Ontario 57-44 for fourth place. Ontario placed sixth.

Class 5A BOYS

Corvallis 46, Thurston 39

EUGENE — Nadav Heyman scored 14 points and No. 3 Corvallis mounted a fourth-quarter rally to defeat No. 6 Thurston 46-39 in the semifinals of the OSAA Class 5A boys basketball tournament at McArthur Court on Friday.

Nick Eason also scored 13 points for the Spartans (25-1), who advanced to the state title game by beating the only team it lost to during the regular season. Alex Hendrickson added 10 points for Corvallis.

Michael Akins led the Colts (21-7) with 14 points and Joey White scored 12. Drew Wiley, the senior wing headed to Oregon, had a forgettable game, recording just six points on 2-of-9 shooting.

Corvallis led 22-13 following a three-point play by Eason at the 4:03 mark of the second quarter.

But the Colts, who had made just five of their first 15 shots from the field got a 3-pointer from Joey White and a jumper from Michael Akins to cut the Spartans lead to 22-18 by halftime.

Thurston continued its hot shooting in the third quarter, opening on a 16-5 run to take a 34-27 lead with 1:58 to play in third quarter.

But then Thurston went cold again. They missed seven straight shots and turned the ball over three times over the next 6:40, opening a window for Corvallis to rally and the Spartans took advantage.

Corvallis scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter and reclaimed the lead on layup by Hendrickson that made it 35-34 with 4:30 to play. Eason followed with a 3-pointer at 3:33 to make 38-34.

Trailing by three, Akins converted a pair of free-throw attempts for Thurston with 28 seconds left to make 40-39, but the Spartans scored the final six points to seal the win.

Jefferson 66, Sherwood 44

Terrance Jones scored 20 points to lead No. 2 Jefferson into the state title game with a 66-44 win against Sherwood.

Tyrone White and Kalonji Paschal also 12 points each for the Democrats (24-1), who shot 56 percent from the field and recorded 18 steals. Jefferson will face No. 3 Corvallis in the championship game tonight.

Connor Rumpf scored 15 points to lead the Bowman (17-11), the only unranked team to make the tournament.

Nine of Sherwood’s 13 field goals were three pointers, though the Bowman were plagued by 25 turnovers.

The Democrats took control of the game early on, breaking a 5-5 tie with an 13-0 run that went from the middle of the first quarter to the 6:30 mark of the second and put them up 18-5.

Class 6A Boys

Grant 71, North Medford 59

EUGENE — Michael James scored 22 and Paul McCoy added 19 points and No. 8 Grant beat No. 5 North Medford, 71-59, in the semifinals of the OSAA Class 6A boys basketball tournament at McArthur Court on Friday.

Michael Moser also recorded 13 points and nine rebounds for the Generals (21-6), who made 24-of-28 free throws in the game, including 8-of-9 in the final three minutes after the Black Tornado (21-8) had pulled within two points.

Josh Pecktol scored 17 for North Medford, which was playing in its first semifinal game in school history. Jordan Ellis added 15 points for the Black Tornado, while Danny Berger scored 12.

Grant never trailed in the game, and led 15-9 after the first quarter and 31-21 by halftime.

Grant lead by 14 points on three occasions in the third quarter before North Medford went on a 6-2 to get back to within 10 points, 48-38, going into the fourth.

A three-point play by Ellis and two free throws from Ryan McLemore again trimmed the Generals advantage to 48-43 early in the fourth, and Pecktol later scored six points during a 12-4 run to pull the Black Tornado within a basket, 57-55 with 3:09 to play.

That was as close as they would get, however, as Grant scored on six of its next seven possessions to fend off the Black Tornado.

Oregon City 62, Sunset 58

Sammy Schafer had 19 points and 14 rebounds and No. 1 Oregon City held of a late push by No. 3 Sunset for a 62-58 victory in the semifinals of the Class 6A boys basketball tournament at McArthur Court on Friday.

Brad Tinsley also scored 18 for the Pioneers (28-1), who will play Grant in the championship game today. Kamal Smith added 13 points.

Garrett Sim had 27 points and eight rebounds for the Apollos (23-5). He scored Sunset’s final 14 points as the team came from nine down in the final four minutes to get within 61-58.

Sim had a chance to tie the game, but his 3-point attempt from the corner with six seconds left hit off the rim.
