Theater and dance groups are hosting events tonight

Classic and favorite movies

Egyptian Theatre

Shark! “Jaws” (1975) will play at 7 p.m. in the historic Egyptian Theatre in downtown Coos Bay. This classic thriller pits man against animal in the touristy beach town of Amity.

“The Ten Commandments” (1956) will play at 3 p.m. Sunday. Moses (Charlton Heston) fights for the Hebrews’ freedom from the Egyptians, led by Pharoah Rameses I (Yul Brynner).

The box office opens one hour before showtimes. General admission is $4, $3.50 for seniors and those 12 and under, and $3 for members. For more information, those interested can call 269-8650.

Folk dancing, live band

Greenacres Grange

The South Coast Folk Society will host an evening of music and dance at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, at the Greenacres Grange Hall, 93393 Greenacres Lane, south of Coos Bay.

Dancers of all ages and abilities are welcome. Live music will be provided by the “Kith and Kin.” The local band has eight musicians, who play a variety of instruments including the banjo, hammer dulcimer, mandolin, flute, concertina, bass, guitar and drums. Guest caller will be Mary Devlin. The event is open to singles, couples and families.

Admission is $5; students and seniors pay $4; and children under 6 will get in for free. Doors will open at 6:45 p.m., and light refreshments will be available. This is an alcohol-, tobacco- and fragrance-free event.

Fiddling and dancing

Pistol River hosts Celtic concert

Fiddler, dancer and singer/songwriter Laura Cortese at 8  tonight at the Pistol River Friendship Hall.

Cortese’s shows boast an energetic mix of driving fiddle, vocals, and stepdance with an original blend of Celtic music and contemporary influences. Tickets are $15 and available at Mory’s and Words and Pictures in Brookings and at Gold Beach Books in Gold Beach. Dance lessons

Bandon Farwest Hall

Dance lessons will be offered at 7:30 tonight at the Bandon Grange Farwest Hall on state Highway 42 South, just east of U.S. Highway 101. A dance will follow. Those attending can wear casual clothing, and singles and couples are welcome. No smoking or alcohol is allowed. There is no charge, but donations will support grange activities.



Square dancing  

Saints ‘n’ Aints

Saints ’n’ Aints square and round dance club will hold a dance at the United Methodist Church, 123 Ocean Blvd., Coos Bay. Line dancing, led by Cathy Houston, begins at 6:30 p.m., pre-rounds cued by Donna Hiserote at 7 and squaring up with Sherm Welch at 7:30.

Musical entertainment

Bowling karaoke contest

North Bend Lanes is hosting the fourth-annual International Bowling Karaoke Contest. The 12-week competition continues at 7 tonight at the bowling alley, 1225 Virginia Ave.

Singers are judged on three elements: vocal ability, showmanship and song delivery.

Final weekend

‘On Golden Pond’ in Bandon

Ernest Thompson’s classic drama “On Golden Pond” will be on stage tonight and Sunday at the Sprague Community Theater.

The show follows Norman and Ethel Thayer as they return to Golden Pond for the umpteenth summer. Their daughter Chelsea arrives with her fiance and his rebellious teenage son Billy (Dante Haruna). On an impulse, Chelsea leaves Billy on the pond with the oldsters. Norman and Ethel face old age and death while Billy gears up for life with all its excitement and emotional struggle.

Performances will be at 7:30 tonight and at 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $12 and $10 for students and seniors.

Back on Port Orford stage

‘Mixed Emotions’ play

The Theatre 101 production of “Mixed Emotions,” a romantic comedy by Richard Baer, is on stage at 7:30 tonight and 2 p.m. Sunday at the theater, 1320 Oregon St., in Port Orford. Tickets are $10.

The play centers around Christine Millman (Dianne Antonio) and Herman Lewis (Rick Antonio), who are widowers in their sixties. Christine is in the process of moving to Florida when Herman shows up on her doorstep and suggests they get married.
