Athletes post strong marks in windy conditions at track opener

Tough conditions didn’t stop athletes from posting several strong marks in the season-opening Siuslaw Icebreaker track meet at Florence on Thursday.
No team scores were kept in the meet, which featured the host Vikings, North Bend, Coquille, Bandon, Gold Beach and Oakridge.
The winners in the field events were particularly solid Thursday.
North Bend’s Lane Seals, the only double-winner among the boys, had winning marks of 20 feet, 5-3/4 inches in the long jump and 43-2 in the triple jump. Teammate Lane Davison cleared 14 feet to win the pole vault, while North Bend senior Luke Clark, competing in track for the first time, won the high jump by clearing 5-10.
In the throws, North Bend’s Elliot Adams had a winning effort of 48-4 in the shot put, while Gold Beach’s Mitch Longwell won the discus with a throw of 148-6. Siuslaw’s Kody Reavis edged Bandon’s Cole Scherer in the javelin with a solid throw of 161-9.
The top marks among boys on the track came in the distance races from members of North Bend’s state champion cross country team. Spenser Lynass, running by himself, won the 3,000 meters in 9 minutes, 16.19 seconds. Trevor Berrian, also far in front of the field, had a winning time of 2:02.75 in the 800.
Siuslaw’s Travis Stevens took the 1,500 in 4:17.51.
Gold Beach got wins by David Bonotto in the 100 and Nathan Moore in the 400. Siuslaw’s Dalton Bliss won the 200, while North Bend’s Kevin Accinelli and Sam Lynass were the winners in the two hurdles races. North Bend swept the relays.
Five girls won two events each.
Gold Beach freshman Sydney Snook had an outstanding effort of 11:11.32 to win the 3,000 meters and also won the 800 in 2:32.26.
North Bend’s Asha Mitchell won both the 100 and long jump, while teammate Miranda Hatcher took both hurdles races. Sammie Clark took the 200 meters and pole vault for the Bulldogs.
Zoe Skordahl of Oakridge won the 400 and the high jump.
The other winners on the track were Siuslaw’s Jennifer Hague in the 1,500 and North Bend’s relay teams.
In the field events, Siuslaw’s Alexis Reavis had a strong effort of 37-4 1/2 to win the shot put, while North Bend’s Jessianne Heley won the discus with a throw of 106-2. Siuslaw’s Jessica Dodson won the triple jump and Frauke Fuchs, an exchange student at Coquille, won the javelin.
