EUGENE — Brad Tinsley scored 21 points and top-ranked Oregon City made the most of its return to state with a 70-49 victory against defending champion No. 4 South Medford in the quarterfinals of the OSAA Class 6A boys basketball tournament at McArthur Court on Thursday.
Bryce Kinney added 18 points, while Kamal Smith scored 11 and Sammy Schafer recorded 10 points and 16 rebounds for the Pioneers (27-1), who played second-fiddle to Three Rivers League rival Lake Oswego and star Kevin Love the last three seasons.
E.J. Singler recorded 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Panthers (22-5), who won’t make the championship game for the third straight season thanks in part to a forgettable game on offense.
South Medford shot just 25 percent from the field, making 17-of-69 attempts from the field. Singler was 4-for-19, while Michael Harthun, the Southwest Conference player of the year, was 3-for-16 for eight points.
Oregon City didn’t have such problems, shooting 52 percent from the field.
The Pioneers were hot from the start. They jumped out to a 17-2 lead and were up 20-6 after one quarter.
South Medford appeared to get going late in the second quarter, trimming the Pioneers’ 33-17 lead to 35-25 by halftime.
But Oregon City opened the second half on a 13-2 run for a 48-27 advantage with 2:29 still to play in the third quarter.
Sunset 46, Central Catholic 43
Garrett Sim had 16 points and six rebounds to lead No. 3 Sunset past No. 7 Central Catholic, 46-43, in another quarterfinal game.
Sim, the California-bound point guard and Metro League player of the year, was the only player to score in double figures for the Apollos (23-4), who will face top-ranked Oregon City in a semifinal game today.
Derek Bowen and Jake Teeny scored 11 points each for the Rams (20-7), the winners of the Mt. Hood Conference who lost for only the second time in their last 17 games.
Sunset led 29-17 at halftime and went into the fourth quarter up 39-26.
But the Rams opened the final frame on a 13-2 run make it just a 41-39 advantage for the Apollos.
Sunset went back up 44-39 with just under two minutes to play, though a 3-pointer by Central Catholic’s Nate Carr made it 44-43 with 45 seconds left.
Greg Shepard made a pair of free throws with 17 seconds to put the Apollos up 46-43 and the Rams missed on a last-gasp 3-point attempt.
North Medford 57, Barlow 54
Josh Pecktol had 13 points and 13 rebounds and fifth-ranked North Medford made its state tournament debut with a 57-54 win against No. 2 Barlow in another quarterfinal.
Danny Berger added 13 points for the Black Tornado (21-7).
Dustin Jones, nephew of former Oregon and Barlow standout Fred Jones, scored 14 points to lead the Bruins (23-4), who were playing in their first state tournament since 2003. Mat Dulaunay also scored 13 for Barlow.
Grant 48, Tualatin 37
Michael Moser had 15 points to lead No. 8 Grant to a 48-37 victory against Tualatin Thursday in the other quarterfinal game.
Moser scored 11 points in the second half when he went 5-for-7 from the field. Paul McCoy added 12 points, 11 rebounds and six assists for the Portland Interscholastic League champions, who finished fourth at the state tournament last season.
Though the Generals (20-6) shot just 38 percent from the field and were outrebounded 29-24, they were solid on defense, recording just as many steals (11) as turnovers.
Unranked Tualatin (19-6) was done in by its offensive struggles in the first half, when it took just eight shots from the field and turned the ball over 14 times.
