CORVALLIS — Chase Bansemer had 17 points and four steals for No. 2 Brookings-Harbor in a 53-34 win against Stayton in an OSAA Class 4A boys state championship semifinal at Gill Coliseum on Thursday.

Brookings-Harbor moves on to play in tonight’s championship, where the Bruins will play Marist. The Bruins will be playing in their first-ever championship game.

After needing a fourth-quarter comeback to beat Hidden Valley in the quarterfinals, Brookings-Harbor (23-2) scored the first four points of the game and never trailed.

The Bruins had a 26-15 halftime advantage, and Stayton (15-13) didn’t get closer than 13 after that.

Fred Corpening added 15 points and nine rebounds for Brookings-Harbor, which shot 23 of 45 from the field.

Stayton was 11-of-38. Coby Proctor led Stayton with 13 points.

Marist 67, Newport 55

Marist held off a second-half Newport rally to pull away for a 67-55 win in the other semifinal game.

David Berney had 30 points — including 20 points in the second half — for Marist of Eugene.

The third-ranked Spartans (24-4) will play for their fifth state championship and first since 2001.

Berney hit three 3-pointers in the first 2:20 of the third quarter, giving Marist a 36-25 lead. Marist later led by 13 before Newport made its run.

The Cubs opened the fourth quarter with a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to 49-44 with 4:59 remaining. Newport closed within five twice more before Marist pulled away.

Dustin Waldron added 14 points for Marist, which opened the game on a 16-2 run. Cole Skriver had 16 points and Jay Torland 13 for Newport (21-8).

GIRLS

Sutherlin 29, Stayton 19

Fifth-ranked Sutherlin scored the last seven points of the game to hold off cold-shooting Stayton 29-19 Thursday in the girls semifinals at Gill Coliseum.

Sutherlin (22-5) will play No. 7 Hidden Valley in today’s championship game, the first for the Bulldogs.

Sutherlin, which had a 29-18 rebounding advantage, got 11 points and seven rebounds from Tess Bennett and 10 points and six rebounds from Sierra Terrel-Perez.

Kelsey Atkins had 11 points for Stayton (19-12). It was an offensive struggle, with the teams combining for 14 of 62 from the field. Stayton was 5-of-31 (16 percent).

Sutherlin never trailed in the second half after leading by five at the break.

The Bulldogs held their five-point lead going into the fourth before Stayton cut it to 18-15 on two free throws by Amanda Mack with 5:44 remaining.

But Stayton only scored two more points from there, and Sutherlin made 8-of-10 free throws in the fourth to hold on.

Stayton went scoreless for more than 11 minutes after Atkins’ 3-pointer gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead two minutes into the game.

Bennett scored eight points in Sutherlin’s 12-0 run, which Atkins ended with a conventional three-point play with 3:01 in the second quarter.

Sutherlin made it 12-9 before Terrel-Perez’s basket just before the buzzer gave the Bulldogs their five-point halftime lead.

Hidden Valley 35, Marist 32

Jamie Richardson and Laura Silva scored nine points apiece as seventh-ranked Hidden Valley held on for a 35-32 win against Marist in the other semifinal.

Hidden Valley (24-4) survived despite making just one of six free throws in the final 19 seconds.

The Mustangs, of Grants Pass, led 18-16 at halftime and never went ahead by more than five in the second half.

Haley Fikso’s two free throws with 1:03 remaining gave Hidden Valley a 34-30 lead. Silva added one foul shot with 14 seconds left for a three-point lead.

Marist’s Kate Wilkins had a potential game-tying 3-point attempt blocked by Hidden Valley’s Ashley Seal.

Marist (21-10) missed two 3-point attempts in the closing seconds. Allie Rogers had 10 points and 14 rebounds for the Spartans.

The teams combined for 45 turnovers.
