LAKEVIEW (AP) — A Lake County sheriff’s deputy is recovering from cuts, bruises and a minor heart attack he suffered while trying to rescue a dog that fell into a sewage treatment pond in Lakeview.

The dog fell through ice and into the sewage pond during a walk with its owner on Sunday, the sheriff’s office said. Deputy Chuck Pore responded to the scene. As he crawled toward the dog, the ice cracked and he fell in.

Pore was attached to a rope held by three other officers, and the trio pulled the deputy from the pond.

Pore was later flown to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend. He was released from the hospital Tuesday and is expected to return to work next week, Sheriff Phil McDonald said.

After Pore’s rescue, a section of ice was chopped open and an Oregon State Police game officer used a small boat to retrieve the dog.

“Chuck’s going to be OK; the dog’s fine,” McDonald said Thursday. “It was a commendable thing he tried to do.”
