Community Sports, Fast Breaks for March 8: Bechard, Nelson take all-events titles at city bowling tournament

Cory Bechard and Stacey Nelson had the top all-events scores in the recent city bowling tournament at North Bend Lanes. Virgil Pekoc and Virginia O’Neal took the titles in the senior tournament.

The all-event scores included totals from singles, doubles and team competitions.

Bechard won the open title, which included men and women, after placing ninth in the singles competition and tying for eighth in the doubles event. Those events, combined with his score from his team competition and his handicap, gave him a total of 2,238 pins, which was 39 better than runner-up Justin Sanne.

Nelson won the women’s all-events title and also the women’s singles title. She rolled a 704 series in the singles event and her handicap gave her a score of 774. Stacey Nelson was second with a score of 730 and Rosa Johnson was third with a total of 720.

Dan Roby took the men’s singles title with a score of 808 that included his handicap. He rolled a 792 series, the best of the tournament, which included two games of 279. David Warrick was second at 786 and Jerry Burkett third at 765.

Mike Brooker and Buddy McClure teamed to win the open doubles competition with a score of 1,460. In a second  pairing, Brooker teamed with Bruce Watts to take second with a score of 1,455. Jim and Darren Posekany were third at 1,442.

The open team competition was won by North Point, which included Toni Smith, Bill McGuire, Ed Meyer, Robin Blackwell and John Smith. Sav-on-Smokes No. 2 finished second with the squad of Rick Surprise, Gloria Surprise, Kathleen Engen, Berrel Vinyard and Trevor Sanne. In third place was the Fireside Cabin team, which featured Dick Besser, Bud Grant, Gary Grassham, Jerry Burkett and Jeff Johnson.

The top women’s doubles team was Lisa Duryee and Lorrie Brooks, followed by Shyla Haire and Shannon Weybright. Rosa Johnson and Jana Taylor teamed to take third.

The women’s team competition was won by Marshfield Bargain House, which included Terri Greif, Pat Richardson, Helen Sutthill and Marianna Mattecheck. That group was followed by the Jurgens Jewelers team of Nede Warrick, Alison Hoggart, Amy Richards and Wendy Carrero and Just Us 2, which included June Kelly, Oda Pendergrass, Glenda Hacker and Donna Sweet.

Julie Graham finished second behind Kay Nelson in the women’s all-events totals.

The top mixed team was Misfits, which included Cory Bechard, Cassondra Bechard, Joan Celentano and Rick Dean. Second place was Not Wholes, which featured Dave Chavez, Shelly Olson, Rich Olson and Toni Smith. Finishing third was the Smoke-n-Ace’s team of Amanda Franklin, Amy Franklin, Sam Linville and Christon Beaird.

In the trio team competition, the Just In Sanne group of Randy Sanne, Trevor Sanne and Justin Sanne finished first. Slackers Trio, which included Jeffrey Lea, Nicole Owens and Daniel Dreveskracht, was second, while Just Us, with Glenda Hacker, June Kelly and Donna Sweet, was third.

In the senior tournament, Pekoc won the singles competition with a score of 753, followed by Ray Alarcon (716) and Nick Boutin and Ray Nichols (695).

Terry Pritchett and Don Grey combined to win the doubles competition, with Sally Ash and Jim Cutrell finishing second. Shirley Cagley and Jerry Collins were third.

O’Neal and Marie Williams tied for the title in the women’s singles competition with scores of 665, while Nita Pekoc was third with a score of 660.

Four Aces, which included Yoriko Creque, Nick Boutin, Charlotte Peters and Richard Dupret, won the seniors team competition. The squad 3 Roses & a Thorn, which included Maxine Rowling, Marge Novak, Berrel Vinyard and Richard Gutierrez, was second, with Dream Team, consisting of Eleanor Harmon, Julie Winn, Mike Weathers and Jim Cutrell, finishing third.

Virgil Pekoc won the senior men’s all-events title with a total of 2,142. Jerry Fagan was second and Berrel Vinyard third.

O’Neal took the women’s all-events crown with a total of 1,970, followed by Nita Pekoc and Marie Williams.

Speedgolf Classic

The annual Bandon Dunes Speedgolf Classic will take place on Sunday, April 6, beginning at 7 a.m.

The Classic includes 18 speedy holes on one of the world’s finest layouts, as well as an array of prizes provided by sponsors. Golfers compete in four age groups.

The unique golfing/running experience is always entertaining. Scoring is based on running time and number of strokes needed to complete the course. Registration forms are available at www.speedgolfinternational.com.

Included with the $80 entry fee will be a continental breakfast.

SeaBreeze Track & Field camp scheduled

Steve Greif, North Bend High School’s head track and field coach, will direct the SeaBreeze Track & Field Camp, scheduled for March 24-28 at the North Bend High School track.

All boys and girls in grades 4-8 are eligible to participate. The program will expose participants to all events of track and field, with a mini meet held at the conclusion.

The fee is $40 with a current Boys &Girls Club membership.

Registration forms are available at local schools or the Boys &Girls Club office.
